In terms of location choice, this kind of classroom with old-fashioned window pane glass carries a deep school feel, creating a wonderful collision with the character's inherent setting during this classroom photoshoot.
Let's focus on the costume and styling. The light-colored attire I am responsible for has an overall color scheme mainly composed of white and light blue, incorporating a massive amount of lightweight materials and floating ribbon elements. To present a better texture under light and shadow, the fabric choice discarded pure cotton, opting for more light-translucent and thinner chiffon and silk-like materials instead. The headpiece section underwent dedicated reinforcement processing to guarantee that it wouldn't generate terrifying shadows blocking the face under side-backlighting. To replicate the character's exquisite feel, the trimming layers of the wig were highly important; just the position of the bangs alone was adjusted with the stylist no fewer than three times.
The black-and-white uniform paired with a bright yellow bow that my partner was responsible for this time represents another completely different style. The hardest part of this kind of cosplay costume with uniform elements is its crispness. To make the bowtie and shoulder contours look highly three-dimensional in the lens, hard lining was added to the interior. The matching white miniskirt and black over-knee socks visually elongated the body proportions.
During shooting, the most interesting part was chasing the light. Because the shooting schedule was fixed, the time window when the sunlight came out was extremely brief. We basically locked down the camera position first, then rapidly adjusted actions based on the moving light spots. Those golden highlights you see casting on the body and face were all completed within a few seconds of racing against time. Backlight shooting indeed enhances the frame's translucency, but it also heavily tests metering and focusing. To guarantee normal facial exposure, we conducted test shoots both in front of and to the side of the window.
Since it is a two-person interactive photo set, chemistry is highly critical. We didn't want it to look like isolated posing where each played their own part; instead, through postures like looking at each other, back-to-back, and sitting on the school desks, we forged a small spatial sense of whispering inside the classroom after school. Throughout the process, the two of us kept chatting casually to relax our emotions, and this kind of organic looseness cannot be faked.
In terms of post-processing, this set of photos did not undergo heavy editing. The light's color temperature and shadows were already beautiful inherently, so we mainly corrected the white balance, cleaned up some cluttered classroom backgrounds in the bokeh, and slightly enhanced the penetrating power of the highlights. We preserved a lot of actual light spots and the line cutting of the window frames, making the three-dimensional feel of light and shadow more realistic.
Counting it all up, it took two full weeks of hard work from makeup and styling to the final photo production this time. Seeing the light and shadow in the final prints casting on the folds of the clothing and the wig, where that texture exclusively belonging to anime cosplay combines with the real-world scene, I still feel it was well worth it. I have always felt that high-quality cosplay is not just about replicating the outward appearance, but more about combining with the environment to tell the daily routine of the character.
