Preparing for this Arknights Dusk cosplay took quite a bit of thought, especially when it came to the landscape scrolls and the sword prop. To capture the authentic texture of an ink wash painting, the landscapes on the scrolls were genuinely hand-painted, and it took a while holding the calligraphy brush to truly find that fluid, bold rhythm of ink splashing onto paper. For the attire, to convey an ethereal yet mystical aura, we chose multiple layers of sheer chiffon fabrics. While stunning, putting them on, taking them off, and maintaining them proved to be a massive undertaking—especially when moving around, as I had to constantly mind the drape of the skirt to prevent ribbons from tangling together.
The wig was custom-ordered with a seamless gradient transition from black to deep blue. Beyond creating a natural color blend toward the ends, securing the horns and elf ears on top was crucial to prevent any slip-ups during larger movements. We also swapped the tail material twice, finally settling on a fabric with a subtle scaled sheen paired with cyan fur trim, ensuring the details held up beautifully both in wide shots and close-ups.
During the shoot, to fit the concept of an ethereal immortal dwelling within a painting, we specifically selected settings with withered branches and classical architectural elements. For the shot holding the sword, the weapon was actually quite heavy; to make holding it appear effortless, my arm muscles were constantly engaged behind the scenes. The color grading also leaned heavily into a cool, ink-toned palette, complemented by post-processing elements like the crimson sun and soaring birds, all aimed at evoking an otherworldly aloofness. Sorting through the photos over the past couple of days, I've fallen more and more in love with the fine details of this design, so I wanted to share these little reflections.
