[Seele Cosplay] Honkai Impact 3rd: Herrscher of Rebirth β€” Dwelling in Eternal Night Photography Record - Image 1

This styling of the Herrscher of Rebirth carries a very strong atmospheric vibe under extreme light sources and a deep, cool-toned scene setting. For this shoot, we decided to restore that cocoon-like serene yet brilliant texture from the original official art on one hand, and capture the subtle details of the character's emotions on the other. The pale blue swing prop you see on the screen, paired with a massive accumulation of stacked white shredded paper or artificial snow flakes, builds up an ethereal physical space. In terms of lighting, I placed special emphasis on a large area of cool-toned ambient light, utilizing high-power blue softboxes at the top and sides to bring the overall color palette closer to the eternal night waters of the character's setting. Because the primary light source leans towards the cool side, a few subtle warm-colored reflectors were intentionally added around the character's face to preserve skin texture and avoid a deathly pale face.

In terms of costume, makeup, and props, this blue-and-black interwoven pleated skirt hem was treated with multiple layers of inner lining to allow it to have a natural drape when sitting down. The pairing of the transparent texture at the skirt's edge and the black stockings is the crucial point for restoring the character's temperament. Before the shoot, quite a bit of time was actually spent adjusting the hair strands of the wig, allowing the bangs to block part of the eye shadows without completely obstructing the line of sight, presenting that slightly cold, enigmatic aura. To match the Herrscher form of this skin, the wearing angles and fastening methods of the accessories were also tested again and again to prevent them from falling off during movements.

During the preliminary shooting, I checked the parameters on the back of the camera body. To ensure the candid capture effect when the gentle breeze brushed against the fabric on site, my shutter speed was set at 1/160 second, paired with a large aperture of F2.8 to obtain sufficient light intake and a shallow depth of field, and the ISO was bumped to 1600 to guarantee image purity. On the screen, everyone can see some metallic structural texture along the edges of the frame; those are the load-bearing points of the swing prop, which actually merged beautifully into a part of the story scene when paired with the cool-toned backdrop. There is a lemon blocking the view in this teaser picture's screen, which was actually a little interlude. At that time, there happened to be some fruits placed by someone else nearby. I thought adding a layer of bright yellow in the foreground would be quite interesting as a shooting record; that lemon wasn't a prop from the original scene, so it counts as a unique sense of contrast characteristic of a shooting work log. Although the foreground might interfere with the visual focus for a formal finalized photo, it feels highly narrative as a behind-the-scenes work photo instead.

With Cosplay photography, the mindset when shooting the Herrscher of Rebirth is very interesting. The character's sense of loneliness while Dwelling in Eternal Night needs to be conveyed through a slight curling of the body and an unfocused gaze. Sometimes, capturing a fleeting sense of breathing room and looseness is more important than simply striking a fixed pose. For the final photoset, a cold white-and-blue post-production tone had already been set during the early stages of shooting. Because this design from Honkai Impact 3rd places great emphasis on a sense of space and moisture, it is very difficult to completely simulate the lighting effects of a game engine in reality. However, through high-power lighting combined with the post-production softening of the sky and empty background, I believe the final texture will stay exceptionally close to the character's core.

The venue we selected this time has a large space, allowing the background to be sufficiently deep so that the subject in the frame stands out completely. Looking at those cool-toned frames in the screen playback, I can already imagine the effect after highlighting the bright spots and enhancing the contrast in post-production. Although we only shot for half a day today, the success rate and our conditions were unexpectedly excellent; the entire process was highly smooth with basically very few wasted shots. The subsequent full Seele cosplay photoset will undergo meticulous color calibration once more, making those cool-toned light beams truly shine within the frame, presenting an eternal night dreamscape belonging to Seele.
