Looking through the finished photos of Hoshiguma the Breacher during editing, I'm still amazed by how striking the costume design is. I previously posted about being terrible at pulling off Onee-san cosplay, but in truth, the pressure came from within. When I first saw the project concept, the bold palette of red, black, white, and teal immediately caught my eye. To faithfully recreate this complex outfit, the wig required layered cutting, a gradient effect at the tips, and a secure mount for the single horn on top. The leather top is quite stiff with numerous straps and buckles, needing careful adjustment to ensure a snug, tailored fit. The intricate patterns on the wide sleeves also took serious thought so the poses wouldn't look rigid.
My biggest concern during the shoot was nailing the expression. Hoshiguma is defined by a cool, aloof demeanor packed with tremendous strength, whereas my natural vibe leans cute and energetic—so forcing myself into an imposing Onee-san aura was definitely a challenge. I focused on controlling my facial muscles, deliberately lowering my brows, and suppressing smiles to convey a colder look. While the prop sword wasn't overly heavy, how it was held and angled forward made all the difference in projecting aggression and dominance. The white skirt nicely highlights leg lines, but pairing it with red high heels turned standing and crouching into an endurance test; my ankles and knees ached constantly. The white lighting cast across the red-and-black outfit against a purple backdrop brought out a cold, dangerous allure. Despite considering myself the least suited for mature roles, seeing the final shots made me feel I managed to capture that quiet, intimidating presence. In post-processing, I tweaked the color balance to accentuate the leather sheen and desaturated the overall tones to match the gritty, post-apocalyptic mood of Arknights. Capturing the character meant testing many subtle details—like the tension of the chest straps and matching the red tones of the gloves and heels. I hope to have more opportunities to hone this kind of powerful presence in the future!
