October 10th is not only the birthday in the original setting but also the starting point of a brand new formal photoset. This time, I shot this Psychologist cosplay 'Long Night' and Emil cosplay 'Starry' duo shoot with Emil. The scene setup used a large area of red tulle as the base, paired with a vast amount of dark red artificial roses, silver chains, and Gothic black lace elements. The color composition of this entire visual scheme is highly extreme, with the colors red, black, and white occupying almost the entire frame. Red tulle produces a highly layered light and shadow gradient under the illumination of the flash, allowing all props and character subjects to pop out—this was one of the key points we considered during the pre-set design.
Emotional control during the shoot was crucial because the character relationship itself has a lot of tension. Ada's makeup and styling are full of details, especially the four cross-star symbols under the eyes and the black-and-gold spiky crown on the head, which have a very solid texture. To restore this dark fantasy-style yandere demeanor, we repeatedly adjusted the lighting angle during the shooting breaks, finding that light position which could make the facial shadow deepest and the gaze most piercing. Emil's silver-grey short hair and purple pupils refracted a cold and glamorous tone against the red light background, forming a complementary visual balance with my long white hair. The costumes we wore utilized quite a lot of black glossy materials; the reflection of these materials combined with the cutouts of local lace can be said to fit the Gothic style cosplay theme perfectly.
The use of chains and padlocks is not purely for aesthetic purposes, but rather to fit the fateful sense of bondage between the characters. Red roses look particularly striking against the black gauze, and we used this element as a link, running through all camera angles for both solo and duo shots. These roses were tucked into collars, shoulders, and even headpieces, echoing the floral elements in the 'Starry' skin of the Emil cosplay well. Although the costumes and makeup were complicated, the shooting process was actually very enjoyable. The photographer's lighting was very attuned to the gloomy atmosphere we were looking for; the light source poured down from directly above, outlining our silhouettes very three-dimensionally.
When collaborating perfectly with props and scenes, the photographer only needed to gently press the shutter to capture a highly natural and narrative-driven scene. To fit the theme, we also put thought into the composition, such as frame-in-frame composition relying on painting frames, or utilizing the extension of silver long chains to divide the screen, making the interaction between the two look both protective and carrying a kind of inescapable binding force. The post-processing of the formal photoset retained many original light and shadow details without too much skin smoothing; skin texture looks even more story-filled under this high-contrast color scheme. We also tried several different expressions, ranging from cold and detached direct gazes to eyes closed in immersion.
This shoot also serves as a commemoration for these characters. From makeup and clothing to the final presentation before the red curtain, we put a lot of effort into the details. Looking at these finished photos, it makes one feel that all the preparation and hard work were worth it. October 10th is a new beginning, corresponding not only to the characters but also to every new attempt we make after meticulous carving. As a Psychologist cosplay, the feeling of playing her in front of the lens is very interesting. As the first time shooting a duo theme with a partner, this collaboration was highly tacit, and the overall atmosphere was spot on.
