[New Jersey Cosplay] Azur Lane Race Queen: Guangzhou Anime Convention Record

After early preparations and on-site shooting at the Guangzhou Anime Convention, I finally have a set of satisfying photos of this Race Queen look. The original design of the character I chose this time contains many racing elements, so the outfit leans toward bright and high-reflectivity materials. Under the overhead lights of the indoor anime convention, the glossy blue patent leather reflected a shine that perfectly matched my expectations. The silver metallic belt buckle and the iridescent borders stitched at the collar and the top's hem added a great deal of sci-fi vibe and layering to the outfit. The goggles are one of the essences of this look; their positioning on the light blue-purple wig had to be adjusted repeatedly to ensure they didn't block my vision while showcasing them as an iconic headpiece. Propped on my head, they served as a perfect character personality anchor. The over-the-knee boots are another highlight of the entire set. They fit incredibly snugly, and the black straps at the top and the front zipper add some tactical/techwear details to the otherwise simple boots. Although the stiletto heels require extra caution when walking, their role in elongating leg proportions and boosting my overall presence is irreplaceable.

Since the crowd at the anime convention was quite large, carrying the black-and-white checkered race flag around made it easy to accidentally brush against nearby passersby or booths. Therefore, we modified the flagpole into segments; we assembled it for shooting and disassembled it to put in the backpack during breaks. This detachable design was a lifesaver. As a prop, the checkered flag was surprisingly useful for posing. Not only did it help me stabilize my center of gravity, but it also enriched the composition, adding dynamic energy to otherwise simple standing poses. The poses we shot were mostly based on on-site improvisation. For example, standing with hands on my hips while holding the flag—this front-facing composition looking straight at the camera allowed all the front details of the outfit to be showcased, such as the belt, the cut of the top, and the lines of the leg boots. Additionally, the half-kneeling pose holding the flagpole, paired with a slightly relaxed facial expression, beautifully softened the toughness of the race suit, adding a touch of playfulness.

The photographer specifically looked for an area with balanced lighting. The indoor diffused light hit the glossy patent leather perfectly, avoiding localized overexposure while capturing the exact luster of the outfit. During shooting breaks, we also frequently checked the neatness of the shoulder straps and collar, because once this material wrinkles, the reflections become messy. This Race Queen style has certain requirements for a cosplayer's physique. The outfit exposes a relatively large area of the midriff and legs, so the positions of the belt and thigh rings must be fitted at the absolute perfect spots to highlight a healthy aesthetic. My personal tip is that when wearing this type of clothing, you must keep your core tight; how upright you stand directly determines the power of the photos.

The community atmosphere at Guangzhou Anime Convention has always been great. Quite a few passersby and fellow fans stopped to take photos during the process. Seeing people accurately recognize the character and sharing our passion was incredibly fulfilling. As a cosplayer, pouring your energy into the preparation and portrayal of a look and finally coming away with a few good photos is the greatest meaning of attending an anime convention. During post-processing, we didn't spend hours on over-editing; we mainly unified the skin tone and slightly enhanced the reflective texture of the patent leather to make the character and props stand out more clearly in the frame. I feel like this outfit can still be further optimized in terms of belt tightness or glove styles, laying a better foundation for the next shoot.

Overall, this Race Queen outfit visually meets the requirements of being dynamic and energetic. The shot of me standing and saluting captures the bold, triumphant feel of a racer welcoming victory, while the shot of me half-lying on the ground with my chin resting on my hand serves as a record of a more leisurely moment. I personally love full-body shots because you can clearly see how every piece of the costume coordinates as a whole. Throughout the styling process, the eye makeup used cool blue-purple tones to echo the wig and lip color. Under the complex lighting of the anime convention, the cool-toned metallic luster of this styling remained very consistent. Since I kept my state up on the day of the shoot, the captured expressions turned out quite natural. All these elements integrated together are exactly the feeling I wanted to express for this cosplay look. Waving the flag in the exhibition hall truly got my emotions pumped up.
