[Sakawa cosplay] Azur Lane: Summer Means Diving In and Playing in the Water

Diving straight into the theme of this shoot: summer is here, and poolside shoots are officially on the schedule. For this session, we used a Canon 5D Mark IV paired with the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 lens—a combination that performs exceptionally well under bright outdoor lighting. The 35mm focal length effortlessly handles both full-length and medium shots, while the wide aperture smoothly blurs the surrounding greenery and pool to make the subject pop. The location was set beside an outdoor pool flanked by lush plants and stone masonry. While ambient light was plentiful, the harsh midday overhead sun tended to cast heavy facial shadows, making the photographer's reflector indispensable.

For styling, I faithfully recreated Sakawa's signature twintails with crimson accents, opting for a pink ruffled Summer swimsuit overlaid with sheer white gossamer and topped with a straw hat. Props included a pink frosted donut float and a green pool lounger. Maintaining facial expression control while executing various poses proved quite challenging. For the first water-kicking shot, calculating the ideal shutter speed was essential to freeze the flying splash at its peak. Later, we explored seated poolside poses, sideways turns, over-the-shoulder glances, and hands lightly playing with hair to convey effortless spontaneity. Photo 5 is one of my favorites from the set: the elongated leg lines look wonderfully proportioned on the 35mm lens, centered cleanly with full framing that balances sweetness and subtle allure.

We communicated extensively on set to try diverse angles; an overhead perspective looking down into the water provided a completely fresh visual punch. Though physically demanding under the sun, reviewing the final frames made every effort worthwhile. The interplay of light and texture brought this Anime-style photo set to life. Even with clutter around the venue, disciplined focal framing kept the compositions pristine, channeling the spirited Girl photography aesthetic that brings 2D enchantment into the real world.
