This Kochiya Sanae Cosplay photoshoot was set at Jizhao Nunnery in Dali. During this season, the hydrangeas are blooming in full splendor. Purple, pinkish-purple, and freshly blooming white flower globes cluster throughout the courtyard, paired with a sea of lush green leaves, naturally creating a very soft color foundation. To match the serene atmosphere of this nunnery, I chose a light-colored, short-sleeved uniform with a sailor collar for the outfit. The deep blue trim on the collar and neckerchief adds layers to the overall styling, while the letter embroidery on the chest and the plaid pleated skirt on the lower half add a touch of retro, everyday campus vibe to the character.
For the wig, I selected a long, straight, light mint-green style. To ensure the texture and smoothness of the hair strands, I meticulously groomed and styled it before heading out to the location, making sure that even under a gentle mountain breeze, it wouldn't look messy or disorganized. The bangs on both sides were cut just right, which, paired with the blue contact lenses and eye makeup, beautifully restored the character's slightly cool, focused, and gentle gaze. The hair ornament on the left side is the finishing touch of this look—the blue-and-white decoration features delicate ruffled edges, and the green plush accents prevent the overall visual center from looking too monotonous.
The long wooden-handled prop held in my hands is a crucial part of this photoshoot. The white rectangular board at the top is painted with a blue-and-white wave pattern. The blue-and-white cord knots at the binding and several hanging ribbons of varying lengths inject a dynamic, extended visual effect into the static image. When shooting, the holding posture of both hands directly affects the mood of the frame. For instance, slightly tilting the prop forward creates a sense of ritual as if about to perform a ceremony, while holding it naturally to the side feels more like a casual moment of wandering through the woods.
The shoot was scheduled for a cloudy afternoon without harsh direct sunlight, as this soft diffused light is very friendly to presenting skin tones and wig textures. The use of a large aperture gives the background hydrangea bushes and leaves a soft bokeh effect, firmly locking the visual focus on the character. The green hair, the white top, the pale purple flower clusters, and the varying shades of green leaves in the background create a highly harmonious resonance of natural colors. Shooting ancient style or anime themes in a unique environment like Jizhao Nunnery often generates a wonderful sense of breaking the dimension barrier due to the venue's solemnity and vitality, which guarantees a high output rate of great photos.
During the initial preparation and post-processing stages, I retained a certain sense of realism for the skin tone and texture, avoiding an over-pursuit of flawless whiteness. After all, keeping a bit of environmental texture under natural outdoor light gives the character more breathing room. The hardness representation of the prop and the dynamic freezing of the ribbons were also slightly fine-tuned during post-processing to make the overall precision of the image more unified. For character styling under the Touhou Project worldview, finding a balance between anime settings and real-world environments has always been a subject I explore in practice, and this shoot at Jizhao Nunnery has undoubtedly provided a great answer.
