This cosplay photoshoot was chosen to be taken at Langyuan, establishing a mixed tone of daily life and functional techwear from the start. To avoid the makeup looking too monotonous, the contour was intentionally deepened for the eye makeup, paired with a black gradient hairstyle and a splash of magenta at the hair ends, hoping to enhance the character's recognition in the frame through pops of local color. The matching white three-quarter sleeve shirt, deep navy blue pleated skirt with white trim, and black thick-soled loafers, topped with that large-capacity black leather single-shoulder bag, made the overall styling clean and sharp. The white lollipop in hand is indeed a wonderful anchor point, enabling interaction between the hand and face during poses, while adding a touch of daily fun to the cool outfit coordination.
However, the weather on the day of the shoot was indeed less than ideal—a typical cloudy and overcast sky. Although natural light under overcast photography is soft and makes the light-receiving surface highly uniform, the drawbacks are also very obvious: the subject can easily be swallowed by the environment, lacking three-dimensionality, and the photos turn out looking as if there is no contrast. Fortunately, this time we relied on the photographer's flash for fill light. The light and shadow cast by the flash not only stripped the person away from the background but also beautifully preserved the texture of the clothing and the luster of the stockings. The cool color temperature of the flash happened to fit the cold, crisp atmosphere this set of photos aimed to build.
Outdoor location shooting also presents some uncontrollable factors regarding the venue. For instance, in the outdoor spiral staircase section, the colors of the walking path and road surface on set were relatively numerous and cluttered. Without compressing the background through a large aperture and focal length, the image could easily look messy and dirty. Therefore, I deeply admire the photographer's composition trade-offs. Especially in that set of high-angle shots overlooking the staircase, utilizing the railing's curves and the road perspective along with a slightly tilted lens formed a highly tense visual orientation. Striking those poses was indeed a bit tiring; to maintain the stance of leaning closely against the railing with the upper body while elongating the leg lines required a bit of core strength, but I just had to push through it for the sake of the photos.
The railway track shot is a closing composition that I personally love, utilizing the perspective of the tracks and the natural green tunnel formed by the dense woods on both sides to capture a strong sense of extension and space. The Sony A7C II used by the photographer has a reassuring dynamic range in low-light environments; even under overcast light, the shadow details at the bottom of the tracks and the sky preservation were quite good, vastly easing the pressure on post-processing so that I didn't need to re-extract details during editing.
Although overcast days are difficult to shoot, adding the hard control of the flash instead presented a unique texture distinct from the high contrast of a sunny day. This shoot at Langyuan was a gamble against the outdoor natural light. Though the process was a bit exhausting, from the final pictures, whether it was the precision of the costume/makeup/props or the control over movements and expressions, it reached my expectations. I can't wait for the next outdoor location challenge.
