[Sankarea: Undying Love cosplay] Rediscovering That Serene Maidenly Feeling Among the Hydrangeas

Choosing hydrangeas as the core of the shoot was the perfect choice to align with the character setting of Sankarea: Undying Love. The weather today wasn't great, but the overcast sky after the rain, filled with moisture, unexpectedly provided a very soft ambient light for this set of photos. That diffuse light hitting the white sailor uniform presented a very clean and translucent feel.

In terms of makeup and styling, I retained the character's signature long black hair and bangs, paired with a blue-purple four-leaf clover hair clip. This school uniform with a white base, purple collar trim, and a blue bowtie, combined with black tights, forms the core of this look for a classic Sailor uniform girl representation. During the shoot, I specifically made sure the tights and skirt pleats were neatly arranged to bring the overall visual closer to that serene atmosphere in this Casual cosplay.

For the set design and composition, the photographer utilized various perspectives, not only incorporating the soft blur brought by a large aperture but also using the surrounding vast field of hydrangeas as foreground and background. The pinks, purples, and blues of the flower bushes perfectly echoed the colors of the outfit, making the overall color tone of the image very comfortable, without any abruptly high-saturation elements. Among the photos displayed, I personally prefer the ones where I hold an umbrella or am half-crouching. In the shot taken on the stone steps while holding a transparent long-handled umbrella, the light from the sky diffused softly through the surface of the umbrella, softening the facial contours beautifully. The other composition where I crouch on a stone visually showcases the details of the uniform pleated skirt and black tights, while also making it easy to capture the shifting gaze.

This shoot was actually a very casual piece of daily snippet documentation. Perhaps it was precisely because the environment was quiet enough that it gave me the opportunity to experience the character's emotions when away from the hustle and bustle. Regarding the description "unspoken confessions rotting inside the hydrangea stems," I have always found it highly artistic, as it gives this set of photos a restrained and introverted emotional tone. Therefore, when facing the lens, I didn't deliberately exhibit intense expressions, trying my best to maintain that calm, slightly detached gaze for this Casual cosplay routine.

In terms of the costume, makeup, and props, we spent quite a bit of effort selecting the exact purple tone of the pleated skirt to restore the texture, striving for consistency between the physical object and the photo tones. The thickness and texture of the tights were also taken into consideration; we ultimately chose this dark and slightly glossy material to better accentuate the leg lines. I believe the meaning of cosplay lies not only in putting on clothes but also in conveying another side of the character through visual language. Facing this garden full of hydrangeas, merging the environment with the person was a very pleasant process for this Hydrangea photoshoot. Although the flowers grew densely and we had to trek between muddy slopes and stone steps to find camera positions during shooting, the final photos made me feel that all the hard work was completely worth it. This feeling of bringing a character into a real-world landscape gives a fresh understanding of the character and the work itself.

Every time I shoot a piece with a high level of restoration, I repeatedly confirm makeup details, and even the angle of the umbrella in my hand and my hand posture. Although these are not decisive elements in optical composition, a micro-adjustment will completely change the image when it comes to building up the visual atmosphere. For this set, we tried our best to present a peaceful, anime-like feel—neither pure real-life documentation nor exaggerated studio photography—but rather an attempt to find that intersection between the 2D world and reality.

Although we encountered rainy and overcast weather during the shooting process, it unexpectedly became a bonus for this project. The softness of natural light is something artificial light cannot fully simulate, allowing the skin texture, clarity of eyelashes, and the weave of the clothing fabric to be preserved optimally. For this release, I captured compositions from several different angles, featuring both upward-tilted perspectives and eye-level contrasts. As can be seen from the photos, the vitality of the hydrangeas superimposed with the character's sense of destiny forms a very wonderful collision. Sitting quietly in the flower bushes at that moment, I felt as if I could truly experience that maidenly feeling where melancholy and serenity intertwine, perfectly embodying the essence of a Sailor uniform girl.
