Inside the venue of the Zhongshan AS25 summer anime carnival, the indoor lighting was bright yet complex, while July's southern summer sizzled outside the glass curtain wall. Standing in this Steampunk gardener maid outfit, I soaked in the convention air mixed with AC chill and crowd heat. The outfit design had rich layering: black underneath a white base, overlaid with a heavy white ruffled apron, and a corset made of dark red fabric with gold thread embroidery, creating solid color contrast. The black scarf at the collar featured white patterns, echoing the striking gold border along the hem line; overall it wasn't a soft, airy style, but carried a firm silhouette.

Preparing for this cosplay required quite some effort in makeup and fitting. To ensure skin looked natural under camera flashes, foundation and concealer prep were crucial, with a sweep of reddish eyeshadow under the eyes to make the expression look gentle and approachable. The headpiece was a standard white ruffled style paired with short brown hair trimmed to fit the character's temperament. Though the wig was pre-styled, considering the crowded venue, I sprayed extra hairspray before leaving to prevent stray hairs from ruining the silhouette. Although this Maid outfit looks light, standing all day in layered fabrics and decorations was actually far more tiring than imagined for Casual cosplay.

This shoot was completed by photographer NightDiva. We found open spots on the venue's first and second floors. When shooting, he habitually used a wide-angle lens with low-angle upward shots in his Convention photography. This perspective elongates body proportions well, bringing skirt hems and over-the-knee sock lines into the visual center of the frame. In the standing full-body shots like pictures two and four, slight knee bends or crossed legs used body twists to soften the stiffness of standing straight, making me look more relaxed and confident. The slightly tiptoed pose actually required core strength to stabilize balance; after taking a few shots, my legs felt sore, but seeing satisfying frames in the viewfinder made all that effort worthwhile.

Lighting at the venue that day was quite unique. Massive circular ceiling lamps provided cool-toned ambient light, while the photographer's flash fill-light brightly illuminated facial features and outfit details. This interplay of cool and warm light made the black-and-white dress look textured, giving black tights a breathable visual effect under strong light. Surrounded by passing visitors and other booths, temporarily isolating the noise in front of the lens to focus purely on expressions and movements was a very comfortable shooting experience for a model. Post-processing avoided harsh stylization, focusing on restoring costume textures and makeup colors to preserve the photo's authentic convention atmosphere.

Every costume has its own language, and this Steampunk gardener's design language is conveyed through dark fabrics, gold embellishments, and white ruffles. Although it might not represent a widely known story background, to me, displaying its dimensional, exquisite side so more people can appreciate its detailed design is the essence of cosplay itself. The charm of anime conventions lies in this versatility and focus—bringing design drafts or imagination into reality with physical fabrics and makeup. Every time I leave the hall and take off the wig and makeup, my heart feels grounded, because an entire afternoon spent in sync with this outfit and photographer was fully preserved in the camera's memory card.
