This photoshoot for Yangyang from Wuthering Waves was truly an exhilarating exploration of Chinese aesthetics. From receiving the garments to finalizing the makeup, we went through multiple adjustments just to make the overall texture fit seamlessly. The blue ombre wig features a tri-color gradient from black to blue to white; achieving a natural transition required immense care and patience during styling. The blue feather hair ornament atop the head and the cross insignia right at the center of the forehead were key focal points of the makeup, dramatically boosting the character's recognizable presence.
For the wardrobe, the ensemble is a flowing wide-sleeved Traditional style cosplay gown blending blue, white, and teal gradients. Made of airy and breathable chiffon, it is adorned with intricate white printed motifs. The inner layer is a white bandeau top beneath layered blue flowing sleeves, tied at the waist with a cyan-blue sash accent. To capture the weightless flutter of the garments catching the wind on camera, we repeatedly waved the sleeves on set to dial in the dynamics. Under intense lighting, the sheer chiffon took on a semi-translucent quality, creating a stunningly beautiful effect as light and shadow filtered through the cascading tiers of the skirt.
The chosen prop was a folding fan featuring blue floral patterns over a black textured base. For pose choreography, I leaned into the character's serene nature, utilizing the fan for half-veiled glances, raising it overhead, looking back over the shoulder, and sitting poised upright. During the shoot, to give the eyes extra spirit, I chose bright blue cosmetic contacts paired with defined eye makeup, endowing the subject with an agile anime-inspired charm.
The set design also involved meticulous preparation. A dark wooden slatted screen set a classical foundation, with white plum blossom branches arranged behind its cutout center. Antique wooden desks, classical tomes, and white plush rugs enriched the visual layering of the scene. To help the subject pop against the dark background, the lighting relied heavily on soft side lighting, which brought out the jacquard patterns on the fabric while accentuating the crisp highlights across the blue ombre wig strands. Through continuous snapshots, we captured numerous satisfying frames. Bringing a game character into a realm of traditional Chinese aesthetic always sparks a uniquely wonderful creative fire.
