[Youmu cosplay] Touhou Project: Night Train Style Drawing Reference

Regarding the costume design, this look utilized a white cross-collar wide-sleeved top paired with a celadon pleated skirt. To align with the ornate art style of illustrator Night train, numerous complex nuances were incorporated. The shoulders feature rhinestone beaded strands, while the waist is cinched with a wide black sash tied with thin red cords and accented with blue beads. Beneath the skirt hem lies a white lace ruffle lining, and the outer skirt is adorned with large hand-sewn blossoms in red, blue, and yellow alongside feathers, with a white skull prop dangling on the left flank.

For props, the red oil-paper umbrella was the core centerpiece. In the first shot, I hold the bamboo handle in my right hand while raising my left, palm cradling a blue butterfly. This pose demands clean elongation across the wrist and shoulder; intending this as a drawing reference, I paid close attention to the directional drape of the fabric folds so viewers can easily study garment flow. The legwear features asymmetric socks—black and white plaid socks on one side, and a ruffled white ankle sock on the other—paired with black platform shoes laced with red straps, elevating visual complexity across the lower body. For makeup, bright blue contacts paired with flushed red shading across the cheeks and nose tip, complemented by the pale bluish-grey wig, black hair bow, and a black choker, gave the portrayal a cool, ethereal porcelain-doll vibe.

While the seamless light grey studio cyclorama was clean, it placed severe demands on pose control and demeanor. In the second frame, facing directly into the lens with hands folded over the umbrella shaft cleanly showcases the full-body silhouette. Because the skirt is voluminous, I turned slightly while angling one leg forward to flatter camera proportions. The black and white plaid socks and white ruffled sock pop vividly from the front, while the platforms sturdily ground the skirt's visual weight. Holding the umbrella steady without obscuring torso lines was crucial. Photographer @SanyuedeBan exercised pinpoint lighting control, rendering the celadon fabric luminous while keeping shadows around the skull and floral appliques crisp and tidy.

Night train's aesthetic thrives on vibrant color contrast and intricate detail. This set leverages stark contrasts among red, green, white, and blue. As an illustration drawing reference, this gallery offers guidance across several key aspects: first, the layering of ornate accessories and floral clusters across skirt folds; second, the articulation of finger knuckles and forearm tension when handling the umbrella and butterfly; third, the foreshortening of platform footwear and asymmetric socks in standing postures. Between takes, we deliberated over camera heights, ultimately selecting eye-level and slight high-angle perspectives to balance costume presence with character focus.

The entire shoot was physically taxing, requiring sustained elevation of the umbrella while keeping a tall, poised spine. The wide sleeve openings easily swallowed arm movements, so when raising my hand to cradle the butterfly, I rolled my forearm slightly outward to preserve the natural drape of the sleeves. The hanging skull prop could easily catch during dynamic motion, so I maintained still or slow, deliberate movements. The flared arc of the celadon skirt and gradient trailing ribbons looked stunning in turns, while static close-ups preserved the depth of the oversized blooms and feathers. The white lace peeked out beneath the hem during movement, enriching silhouette volume. The blue contacts and flushed eye makeup cleanly channeled the character's unearthly, serene coolness, while the black choker defined the neckline. I'm thrilled to have brought this Youmu interpretation to life, with huge gratitude to @SanyuedeBan for their expert guidance.
