Today I'm sharing the shoot for this Mari Iochi cosplay; even after shooting it many times, I still find this look truly timeless. This costume has so many details: the black-and-white spliced skirt hem paired with grey ruffles, along with the striking yellow bow and green gem on the chest, creating an overall color palette that offers both contrast and freshness. What I love the most are the fox ears on top of the head, the mini top hat adorned with a yellow rose, and the star-shaped halo, which instantly elevates the visual layering.
For this shoot, we chose a European classical studio set with white sheer curtains, arched lattices, as well as an abundance of light blue hydrangeas and white bare branches, forming a soft visual contrast with the black-and-white dress. Props like the birdcage and candelabras also helped maximize the atmospheric feel, especially that white birdcage filled with light-colored roses placed by my feet, which added a great sense of narrative.
To showcase the silhouette of the dress, we tested two main posing styles: sitting and standing. The seated angle beautifully displayed the lines of the Black tights outfit and the large bows on the shoes, while allowing the skirt to spread out naturally and blend with the surrounding flowers. The standing pose was relatively upright, allowing the geometric patterns on the dress to be fully displayed. This time, we also specifically captured a few close-ups with closed eyes and side profiles to express a quiet, leisurely mood.
As an enthusiast of Cosplay photography, I care deeply about the texture of garments and the sturdiness of accessories. The cuffs of this outfit feature multi-layered ruffles, and the puff sleeves at the shoulders really test the tailoring. Before shooting, I specifically readjusted the tightness of the belt to prevent wrinkles from forming after sitting for a while. The golden-yellow wig has braids on both sides, which takes a bit of patience to style, but the resulting photos look fantastic.
The biggest challenge during the shoot was actually the lighting in the studio. Because a lot of high-key soft light and white reflectors were used, it could easily become overexposed with the slightest negligence, really testing the photographer's lighting control. Ultimately, the finished photos retained this bright and translucent quality, perfectly matching the character's cool yet sweet demeanor in Blue Archive.
Additionally, wearing those black high heels for a long time was a bit tiring, but for the completeness of the overall styling, I pushed through the entire session. Fortunately, I'm very satisfied with the results, especially those poses resting my chin on my hands and hugging my knees, which made the whole frame look both relaxed and natural. This shoot was a delightful experience that deepened my appreciation for this character's look.
