[Tewi Inaba Cosplay] The Rabbit-Eared Youkai Fairy of Touhou Project: A Little Challenge of Real Hair Cosplay

The photos shared this time are meant to reveal some real moments and blooper experiences while cosplaying Tewi Inaba from Touhou Project. Although I joked in the post description that it was "silly yet reassuring," there were truly many unexpected details.

The primary issue was the hair. The wig was already styled, but because I wore the wig cap for too long yesterday, it left a red, swollen mark on my forehead. If I wore the wig, that cap indentation would be glaringly obvious in photos. Since my natural hair length happened to be close to the character's hair, the idea popped up to attempt a real hair cosplay for a few shots. The result? "Disaster" is definitely the right word. Wigs yield great results because they hold a fixed shape without having to worry about flat roots. However, natural hair contacts the scalp, and sweat combined with ambient humidity quickly makes it lie flat. Even though my medium-short hair matched the length, it was tough to achieve the fluffy, airy layers of a wig. Especially the bangs—controlling those fine, anime-style curves was nearly impossible. Despite my best efforts to style it by hand, the final look turned out quite casual.

Although the real hair was far from perfect, I was quite pleased with the rest of the outfit. The dress features pink-and-white plaid elements, combined with a large white lace semi-sheer mesh panel at the neckline, giving off a gentle texture reminiscent of a charming Lolita outfit. The small orange pendant on the chest added a cute highlighting touch, keeping the outfit from looking dull. The pair of huge, fluffy white plush rabbit ears on my head served as the core of this look; wearing them definitely changed my aura and instantly brought out that Touhou Project and Touhou Imperishable Night Tewi Inaba vibe. Though she is a clever little rabbit fairy, using my own hair this time created a somewhat more relaxed, "everyday" side of her.

For makeup, I stayed close to the character's color palette, opting for reddish-brown contact lenses to make my gaze softer, paired with light orange-pink blush and lip color. I kept the intensity light so it harmonized with the natural feel of real hair. The shooting environment was mainly inside a car and outdoors near the car window. The shot inside the car had very soft lighting angles, making my skin complexion look great and keeping the background clean. Shooting through the glass provided even lighting and reduced facial shadows, making the overall photos turn out pretty decent.

Sharing cosplay is just like this: sometimes a well-prepared wig becomes unusable due to unexpected mishaps, and stepping in with real hair creates results that deviate from expectations, yet it authentically documents the journey. If you ever run into a situation requiring real hair cosplay, definitely pack extra styling spray and hair wax, and prepare ways to conceal wig cap marks. I think the most fun part of cosplay isn't necessarily delivering flawless magazine-style shots, but the process of trying various complex steps to recreate a character. Even the blooper moments become warm, memorable slices of life.
