A record of the costume details and shooting process for this Maki Nishikino cosplay.

The outfit chosen for this Maki Nishikino photoshoot is one of the classic purple idol stage costumes from Love Live!. When crafting this attire, the greatest effort went into the layered skirt: the outer layer features delicate white lace and ruffles, while the inner lining is rich purple fabric, supported by double-layered petticoats to achieve the perfect voluminous bounce. Because the skirt has a generous sweep, spinning around creates a flawless circle. The vivid contrast between purple and white harmonizes with the purple bow on the wig for a unified palette. Black trim and bowtie accents keep the overall look grounded and elegant. The black ribbon at the neckline comes attached, while the red wig required meticulous trimming of the bangs to flatter the character's facial silhouette.

Lighting at the convention was quite challenging to manage—the indoor hall was dim, and the polished floor tiles reflected light heavily, making it easy for backgrounds to blow out or subjects to appear underexposed. To achieve optimal results, the photographer utilized off-camera flash and continually adjusted reflector angles. Given the cluttered backdrop of booth structures and passing crowds, we used wide apertures for soft background bokeh to make the subject stand out. When posing, controlling the skirt was key: lifting the hem required graceful hand posture, and jumping shots demanded precise tucking of the legs and elevation so the skirt flared out like a blossoming flower. As these are authentic Convention photos, preserving genuine ambient elements like floor shadows and background lighting is precisely what gives live convention shoots their charm.

Reflecting on shooting this set, my understanding of Maki Nishikino is that she is tsundere on the surface yet tender inside; thus, facial expressions could not look forced, prioritizing a natural, confident presence. Among the poses, I particularly love the single-leg standing pose because it beautifully showcases leg lines and the garment's structure while being ideal for dynamic snapshots. However, wearing this outfit across the convention hall was physically demanding: the structured petticoat was heavy, walking was cumbersome, and thick boots were tiring, requiring constant care to avoid tripping. Despite the physical effort, reviewing the vibrant frames in the camera monitor made everything feel thoroughly worthwhile.

Overall, the shoot was a great success. The photographer captured numerous stunning candid moments, adjusted light and shadow swiftly, and kept communication effortless. The process mainly involved finding optimal lighting positions, dodging crowd interference, and maintaining a bright smile. For makeup, eyeliner was drawn slightly elongated to brighten the eyes, and eyebrows were lightened to match the Red hair and purple dress aesthetic, giving the whole face a lively, energetic feel.

Looking back at the day, waking up early and getting dressed took considerable time due to the outfit's complexity, not to mention styling hair and makeup. Navigating through the sea of people made finding open shooting spots tricky, but fortunately, we secured a relatively open space with great light, allowing the shoot to proceed smoothly. Sorting through the photos afterward felt like reliving the whole excitement. Although wearing this heavy purple stage costume was tiring, settling into each pose and watching the voluminous skirt spin before the camera created truly wonderful moments.
