Today's Convention photo set explores the darker, alternate side of the Doctor from Identity V. While she is commonly perceived as a supportive lifesaver, I wanted to shatter that stereotype, anchoring the shoot around the theme of 'poison or remedy' to project an intensely oppressive aura.
Let's start with the thought process behind the makeup and styling. To achieve that fractured, dark aesthetic, the foundation was kept starkly pale. Eye makeup was the central focus, using an expansive blend of red eyeshadow paired with crimson contact lenses to conjure an unhinged, perilous gaze. The silvery-white wig was braided into twin plaits to blend vintage charm with a morbid touch. Faux blood was generously applied across the face, neck, and garments; the splatters couldn't be too uniform, requiring a mix of erratic splashes and smeared streaks to look convincingly visceral. The Bandage wraps along the legs and black gloves served as crucial details—replacing conventional hosiery with bandages not only reinforced the clinical motif but also visually segmented the leg lines to impart a sense of physical restraint.
For the wardrobe, the off-white shawl was weathered with distress marks and bloodstains, layered over a black Nurse outfit dress and grounded by leather pouch belts that injected a gritty wasteland edge. The most prominent prop was the oversized syringe filled with crimson fluid, which offered immense creative room during posing.
As someone who frequently hits conventions for event snapshots, I've gathered a few posing insights. We scouted a relatively open corridor with strong spatial depth inside the hall. Low-angle shots are a powerhouse technique for elongating leg lines; for instance, sinking low in kneeling stances while extending one leg forward flatteringly accentuated leg proportions. In the standing pose raising the syringe while looking down into the lens, tight core engagement and a slight forward lean generated palpable intimidation. For expressions, avoid standard smiles into the camera—try cast-down gazes or letting unhinged fervor and disdain slip through your eyes. Paired with varied stances, the narrative intrigue flows effortlessly.
Convention lighting is notoriously chaotic, yet the cool ambient tones of the venue actually harmonized flawlessly with this chilling, dark aesthetic. By dodging crowds and finding metallic or moody backgrounds, shooting wide open to blur distractions instantly pulled viewers into the premise. When embodying an aggressive character, I love interacting directly with the lens—reaching forward or hoisting the syringe skyward ensures the captures transcend static portraits to deliver tension ready to burst through the screen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole session; from pre-shoot prep to live improvisation, it was an exhilarating creative test. Poison or remedy? Perhaps that choice rests entirely in the Doctor's hands.
