This set of photos took quite a while to prepare, primarily aiming to recreate two classic looks of Enma Ai from Hell Girl. The first is the black long-sleeved sailor uniform; the white collar stripes and red neckerchief details are neatly structured, paired with a black pleated skirt and knee-high Black stockings, establishing a classic black-white-red palette. For optimal camera results, the Black stockings were deliberately chosen in a slightly thicker, non-reflective fabric so that seated poses on the wooden floor wouldn't cast awkward glare along the leg contours. The shoes were black buckled leather Mary Janes, harmonizing effortlessly with the overall aesthetic.
The second look is the black floral kimono, densely patterned with an intricate tapestry of red, white, yellow, and green blossoms that provide rich visual texture. The kimono obi was tied with red-and-blue cords, centered around a large red bow at the back as the styling anchor. Wearing this required kneeling in seiza on the tatami mats with white split-toe tabi socks. Because the kimono fabric is substantial and crisp, the sleeves draped with wonderful weight when turning sideways to lift the bamboo scroll.
For props, I prepared red spider lilies (higanbana) and a bamboo scroll bound in red cord. Holding the bamboo scroll provided tangible physical weight, making gestures look far more natural before the lens. Makeup centered around red contact lenses paired with long, straight black hair and blunt bangs. The crimson pupils were exceptionally striking in low-key lighting, immediately anchoring visual focus. Because blunt bangs easily obscure the eyes when bowing or turning sideways, I continually micro-adjusted my chin angle during side-profile shots to ensure my gaze peered through the parting of the fringe.
The location was a Japanese-style interior featuring a red-and-gold floral folding screen, wooden sliding lattice doors, and woven straw mats. The crimson hue of the screen echoed the kimono and the spider lilies beautifully. Pink petals were scattered across the floor as delicate accents, enriching compositional depth. Since this was shot around Halloween, lighting was somewhat tricky; fortunately, the natural and indoor lights balanced nicely—slightly warm yet rich in color depth, yielding vibrant tonal gradations straight from the camera without heavy post-processing.
While the overarching mood leans dark and gothic, every detail from garment adjustments to prop placement closely adhered to the 2D original design. The physical process was quite demanding: the tight kimono obi and prolonged kneeling caused leg numbness, while sitting on the hard floor in the sailor suit also grew uncomfortable. Still, seeing the final photos made all these intricate preparations completely worthwhile. Shot last Halloween and only fully edited now, I hope sharing this dark-themed styling diary offers helpful inspiration to fellow fans.
