Putting on this dark modernized vintage Cheongsam and standing in front of the full moon backdrop, holding that heavily weighted red-and-black prop spear in hand, I instantly entered the role-playing game state of this Shanhaijing Sect Leader character. This photoshoot can be described as an ultimate test of light, shadow, and styling.
The satin material of the Cheongsam is highly prone to producing large areas of bright specular reflections under the strong lights of a photography studio, and a slight oversight could result in a loss of clothing details. To perfectly showcase the texture of the golden dragon patterns and the golden scaly skirt hem on the Cheongsam, we repeatedly adjusted the angle of the main light source, achieving an effect that preserved the satin luster while keeping the contours of the patterns clearly visible. The long spear prop in hand is one of the souls of the entire look. It not only increases the tension of the postures in hand, forming a contrast of strength and softness against the flowing and elegant garments, but it is also a heavy-duty 'physical workout.' To strike the most natural and relaxed stance holding the spear, my arms were actually tensing with strength covertly.
The Chinese carved wooden couch and soft white fur cushion, paired with that giant glowing full moon behind me, create a sense of serenity akin to a nighttime courtyard. The white rabbit plushie on the left side of the frame and the traditional Chinese painting scroll on the floor make the entire scene more vivid, as if truly placed in a midnight corner full of Eastern classical charm. During the shoot, it was necessary to balance the elegance of the sitting posture while ensuring the lines of the legs looked slender and upright under the enhancement of the black patent leather high heels and black stockings; this indeed required some theatrical body control.
I particularly love this kind of studio cosplay theme that fuses a modern feel with classical elements. Although the clothing is quite form-fitting and the addition of high heels made maintaining the shooting postures for an extended period quite grueling, all the fatigue turned into anticipation for the final photos the moment I saw the camera playback catching the upright silhouette and chilly gaze outlined by the light and shadow. This process of reshaping a character's temperament in front of the lens is the moment a cosplayer enjoys the most. Materializing a character's setup from a 2D world through 3D physical props, clothing, makeup, styling, and scene art is inherently a highly fulfilling form of artistic expression.
During this shooting process, I also accumulated more experience regarding lighting on reflective fabrics and capturing dynamic postures. Between the interlaced light and shadow, the image of the Shanhaijing Sect Leader is frozen at this second. Carrying this love for the character and cosplay, I look forward to continuing to unlock more diverse visual presentations in different styles of styling and scenes in the future.
