[Phainon Cosplay] Through Hardships to the Stars: Farewell from Amphoreus

I completed this Phainon cosplay shoot at the Naihuangbao Anime Convention, taking a lot of effort from makeup testing to final execution. To achieve a slightly messy yet smooth texture for the silver-white hairstyle wig, I spent a substantial amount of time trimming the ends and adjusting the bang length. The final result is the naturally draped look seen in the photos, covering most of the eyebrows and eyes, which perfectly fits the character's serene and somewhat distant tone. Regarding the costume, the most grueling part was the glossy black shoulder armor on the right arm. The real object had an intensely bright sheen; to avoid blown-out harsh white highlights under dim indoor lighting, the photographer used numerous soft light accessories during lighting setup to suppress highlight reflections. The spliced jacket with a white base and black-and-gold color scheme is made of a rigid composite fabric, giving the upper body a broad silhouette and a very stable visual center of gravity upon wearing. The geometric gold patterns on the chest and sleeves were crafted with gold foil stamping, yielding delicate metallic reflections under side-backlighting that subtly echo the metal ring on the shoulder armor.

There was heavy foot traffic at the convention on the day of the shoot. To avoid the crowds, we specifically found a secluded resting corner, where dark brick walls and a fireplace structure happened to create an enclosed space resembling an indoor tavern. This shot utilized a single overhead key light combined with a side reflector. The main light source came from directly above and slightly forward, creating strong rim highlights on the top of my hair, the edges of the shoulder armor, and the white shirt, while my face and lower body sank into shadow. This high-contrast light and shadow not only strengthened the material contrast of the armor, but also fully dialed up the atmosphere of "sitting alone in a corner, lost in thought." The small white card on the round table was an improvised prop, placed slightly tilted to form a diagonal line with my lowered gaze, guiding the visual focus toward the tabletop. During shooting, I intentionally leaned my body forward with hands naturally spread on the table edge, avoiding complex or forced poses. The core demeanor of Phainon is "quiet yet powerful," which requires suppressing one's breath rather than making exaggerated movements.

The emotional tone of the entire photo set carries a slight weight, much like the post description says: "All shall part from one, while he alone shall behold the miracle." Although as a cosplayer I cannot fully replicate that sense of fateful destiny from the storyline, through the contrast between the dark clothes and gold accents, the bowed head, and the dim environment, I tried my best to convey a subtle mood of "about to depart, yet lingering with attachments." Throughout the shoot, the photographer kept emphasizing that hand movements should be naturally relaxed rather than tense, because rigid hand gestures paired with the sharp lines of armor would look overly "combat-oriented," whereas this scene represents more of a quiet reflection after a brief rest. During post-editing, a vast amount of shadow detail was preserved—such as the shadows on my left fingers and the wood grain of the table—without over-brightening, solely to maintain that calm and restrained tone. The ambient light at the convention was actually quite chaotic, but through Cosplay photography techniques that dimmed ambient light and boosted subject contrast, the photographer filtered out the messy background completely. The visual focus of this photo set is highly concentrated, and I am very satisfied with this texture myself.

As for the wearing experience, that shoulder armor was actually quite heavy; sitting for a long time made my shoulder a bit sore, but to accurately restore the character's appearance, this small price was necessary. The black fingerless gloves were made of anti-slip leather, keeping fingers flexible, though the gold forearm armor on the cuffs was somewhat rigid, slightly chafing my wrists when bending my elbows. However, once the pose was set, it looked totally fine in the shots. The name Phainon itself carries deep meaning within the Amphoreus background of Honkai: Star Rail, and the phrase "Through hardships to the stars" matches the imagery conveyed by this photo set perfectly. Although it was just a routine convention shoot, I hoped to express the character's state of "poised on the brink of departure" through these photos. Returning to the actual shooting process, adjusting the seating angle was tested repeatedly because the height of the table and chair had to be coordinated so that my shoulders dropped naturally while ensuring the sharp tip of the shoulder armor wouldn't obstruct my cheek outline. This final frozen frame was the most relaxed state captured during nearly an hour of shooting. The Phainon look turned many heads at the convention, with many fellow fans asking how the shoulder armor was secured, making me feel that the accuracy of this gear received genuine recognition. This share doesn't contain overly ornate lyricism, but rather records real insights and shooting technique details from this output, hoping to provide some reference for friends who also like this look.
