This Yanami Anna shoot, made possible with camera gear rented from Lanto, was a school style cosplay interpretation I particularly enjoyed recently. As the spotlit foodie girl in Too Many Losing Heroines!, capturing her easygoing, eccentric, yet adorable nature actually tested our on-site improvisation far more than expected.
Preparation for makeup, hair, and costume was also very meticulous. Her signature bright blue short hair with a stubborn ahoge, paired with large black-framed round glasses, instantly created high character recognition visually. The blue-and-yellow bow tie complimented the classic white shirt and gray pleated miniskirt, while a sleek watch strap on my wrist, along with an over-the-knee socks outfit and black uniform shoes, rendered a remarkably fresh Japanese campus everyday feel. The strikingly contrasting hair color also popped immediately within the classroom environment.
The scene setup contributed enormously to our shoot. The wooden desks and chairs of the old classroom brought an inherent nostalgia filter, which, combined with hand-drawn chalk art on the blackboard, pulled the frame right into a youthful high school story. Lighting was applied very softly, illuminating the wig's texture while keeping the indoor atmosphere clean and translucent, avoiding any cheap, over-lit plastic look.
During shooting, we planned very specific pose designs. For instance, using plastic-bagged bread and soda cans to capture frozen moments of biting into bread, or interacting with a blue plushie to strike exaggerated poses like saluting, kicking, and stretching. These seemingly unpolished or lazy poses actually fit her unpretentious, lively, and extroverted personality traits wonderfully. For shots seated at the desk, actions like adjusting glasses or crossing legs aimed to showcase the drape of the pleated skirt and leg lines of the over-the-knee socks outfit, capturing both a high school girl's routine and her unique, adorable tsundere charm.
For cosplay, recreating physical appearance is only one part; immersing oneself in the character's mindset is even more crucial. Yanami Anna has many quirky little habits, like taking huge bites of food or slumping over. Making these actions feel natural rather than forced heavily tested expressiveness. Thankfully, during moments of munching on props and making funny faces, we maintained her easygoing nature, which, captured quickly by the photographer, preserved a wonderful sense of lively charm in the final photos.
The final results are thoroughly satisfying, with every photo carrying a vivid narrative feel.
