[Chiyo Sakura Cosplay] Recreating Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun Street Snap at Anime Convention

Over the weekend at the Firefly Expo, I decided to appear in everyone's view as Chiyo Sakura from Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. Choosing this character was because her naturally airheaded yet hardworking personality is extremely endearing, and her school outfit is iconic with high recognizability. For these Firefly convention photos, I spent a lot of time preparing beforehand, especially that iconic long straight orange wig. Since the original design features sleek, flowing hair, I put significant effort into styling it, ensuring no tangles while maintaining a glossy yet airy texture. To better align with the character's dimensional presence, I wore blue contact lenses matching the anime setting, which rendered a translucent texture under sunlight. The red-and-white polka dot bow on my head was also a vital restoration point; to keep it full and upright visually, I secured it with multiple layers of clips to avoid deformation during outdoor movement or winds.

Regarding apparel, I selected a standard short-sleeved white shirt paired with a yellow knit vest, with a dark navy ribbon tie neatly fastened at the collar—rigorous yet cute. The lower half consisted of a matching pleated skirt, paired with a high-quality Black tights outfit and black platform loafers. This school style cosplay ensemble instantly brought back the raw nostalgia of student days. Particularly, the addition of black tights gave the overall look enhanced texture under outdoor sunlight at the convention. The matte texture of the tights and the glossy patent leather of the shoes formed a wonderful visual contrast, while making leg lines appear softer and longer.

On the day of the shoot, photographer \"小笼包\" took me to shoot along streets surrounding the venue. Outdoor lighting was abundant; direct sunlight overhead often casts unflattering shadows, but \"小笼包\" was very experienced. She selected the best side-light hours, helping me avoid facial shine while utilizing golden natural light to outline a lively and warm character silhouette. We also specially used a dark green hard-shell vintage suitcase as a prop. Serving both as a seat and enriching environmental colors in several photos, the dark green formed a complementary color-block contrast against the orange wig and yellow vest.

I really love the candid photo taken while sitting on the luggage. With sunlight striking my hair, I gently brushed side hair strands with one hand while naturally supporting myself on the case with the other, legs crossed slightly. The natural extension of black tights combined with the platform loafers visually elongated my lower body proportions, carrying a maidenly charm amid relaxation. Compared to plain standing, this seated posture conveys a relaxed everyday vibe, as if she were a real high school girl resting or waiting for a bus by the roadside.

When recreating anime characters, people often focus solely on purchasing costumes, whereas expressing demeanor is actually far more crucial. Chiyo Sakura is a high school girl who easily blushes yet possesses great inner strength. In front of the camera, I tried hard to adjust my gaze and hand gestures to express her nervous yet earnest nature. For instance, in a photo with hands clasped in front of my chest while tilting my head slightly toward the lens, that action perfectly fits her anxious yet expectant emotion. Another shot putting her bag over her head was more relaxed, capturing the character's occasional clumsy and playful nature.

Although the day's shoot was a bit exhausting, recreating this adorable character on a real street corner gave me a great sense of achievement. The charm of outdoor convention photos lies in seamlessly fusing 2D settings with 3D light, shadow, and atmosphere. Photographer \"小笼包\" preferred retaining raw, natural textures during post-processing without over-smoothing skin or altering lighting logic, making final images look very grounded—giving an illusion that the character truly appeared on modern city streets.

This uniform is truly versatile—not only packing strong character attributes, but also creating great ambiance when running around ordinary amusement parks, cafes, or street corners during convention days. If given the chance later, I might explore this character's different outfits across seasons and discover more interesting angles, like recreating her buying snacks after school to experience a different style of Chiyo Sakura cosplay. From outdoor lighting to posture control, this shoot gave me fresh insights into cosplay practice.
