Sharing an official Cosplay photoshoot set of Reimu Hakurei today. This coordinate is the fruit of quite a bit of preparation.
Starting with the wardrobe: it is a Red and white outfit designed as a Japanese style shrine maiden attire. The top features wide sleeves with delicate ruffled accents; while the fabric is relatively breathable, wearing the two inner and outer layers outdoors still felt somewhat warm. Crimson piping lines both the collar and cuffs. To capture the aesthetic of the original character art, the skirt and top were tailored as separate pieces, allowing the skirt hem to flutter effortlessly while moving. The enormous red bow atop my head is truly the soul of the look—reinforced inside with stiff interfacing and wrapped in gold-patterned fabric, with small side hairpins added for support so it wouldn't tilt askew with the slightest motion.
For the wig, I selected a dark brown long straight style and tied it into a side ponytail. I trimmed the bangs into soft layers myself and touched them up lightly with a curling iron to avoid stiffness. Securing the ponytail required multiple bobby pins. The breeze was quite brisk on the shooting day, easily blowing loose strands across my face, so I had to smooth my hair every few minutes.
Regarding props, the Talisman props in hand were entirely handcrafted. I cut white cardstock into long strips, drawing the red borders and spell runes stroke by stroke with a fine-tip marker. The paper could neither be too flimsy—lest it lack body when swung—nor too thick to fan out smoothly in hand. The brush prop in my other hand was modified using lightweight materials. When posing, I gripped the base of the talismans with slight hand tension to project a combat-ready stance. Pointing the brush tip directly toward the lens enhanced dynamic foreshortening, giving viewers an engaging, face-to-face experience.
The location was chosen at an outdoor setting featuring red and green accents, where the background's vermilion timber architecture and blue latticed windows echoed the colors of the character's costume seamlessly. To create an impactful composition, I leaned my torso forward, locking my gaze firmly onto the center of the lens. Shifting my center of gravity forward while keeping facial expressions natural put considerable strain on the core and lower back. The photographer captured numerous shots, and this chosen frame nails both the fierce eye contact and kinetic momentum.
As for expression control, Reimu Hakurei possesses a straightforward, candid personality—she shouldn't appear overly delicate, nor excessively ferocious. Parting my lips slightly while pairing it with an intent gaze, I aimed to convey a confident readiness for action. Makeup emphasized the eyes, defined with sharp eyeliner and false lashes for vivid eye contact. The foundation was chosen for long wear, given how easily one sweats during summer outdoor shoots.
Every time I shoot an official set—from pre-production crafting of costumes and props to on-set adjustments and pose direction—it represents a complete creative endeavor. For this session, I ventured into fresh attempts with action staging and camera interaction. Bringing these 2D elements into three dimensions, channeling the character's essence through physical presence and expression, is inherently an exciting challenge. Achieving these final results is truly thanks to polishing every single detail beforehand.
