[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Azure Gensokyo: Intertwining Summer and Japanese Style

The design of this Azure Spirit Dream outfit fully integrates traditional Japanese elements with Wa-lolita sweetness. Dominated by white and sky blue, accented with soft pink and pale yellow flowers, it aligns perfectly with the thematic concept that "summer in Gensokyo is azure." When I first received this costume, my favorite aspect was its airy yet intricate layering—especially around the cuffs and hemline, which feature abundant ruffles and semi-translucent lace fabric with white embossed floral patterns, creating a dreamlike translucency when light filters through.

For the headpiece, an oversized bow tiara features complex blue-and-white floral fabric, flanked by delicate tassels and pearl hangings that greatly enhance character recognition. The wig is dark brown long straight hair with straight bangs, adorned with Japanese-style rope knots and cloth hair ornaments, which highlight facial refinement while harmonizing seamlessly with the hairstyle. For props, I prepared a blue-themed folding fan and a decorative wand with long ribbons. The breeze was lovely on shooting day, gracefully lifting the soft ribbons and wide sleeves into fluid lines—giving the frame lively dynamism rather than stiff static poses.

The makeup leaned toward a soft, energetic summer vibe, focusing on blended eyeshadow and blush paired with dewy lip makeup, making the overall look both clear and lively. To recreate that airy feeling of fanon designs, the base makeup was kept light, dissolving smoothly into the ambient lighting of the Japanese room. The location was a traditional wooden Japanese courtyard, complete with wooden sliding doors and paper lanterns featuring red plum blossoms hanging under the corridor. Combining these traditional elements with Anime cosplay that incorporates Western dress elements creates a wonderful visual chemistry—fitting the Touhou Project worldview that straddles tradition and fantasy.

The photographer captured the interplay of sunlight streaming across the wooden floor beautifully, while blurred pink flowers and green leaves in the foreground created strong depth of field and visual layering. From fabric selection and custom props to location picking and angle crafting, every step was filled with respect and love for the character.
