Putting on this vibrant New Year Qipao allowed me to experience the festive Chinese New Year atmosphere early in front of the lens. From selecting the attire to building the set, preparations for this shoot were extremely thorough, and I'm sharing some details and insights behind this photoset here.
First, talking about the costume, this Qipao design is highly rich in traditional Chinese charm while retaining the character's inherent vitality. The modified standing collar and frog buttons are paired with a large area of red and black color-blocking, and the intricate gold embroidery patterns on the chest and waist make the overall look appear gorgeous and noble. The fluffy white stole and cuffs, combined with the prominent animal ears on my head, add a festive joy while preserving the character's high recognizability. The white over-the-knee socks on the lower body are a major highlight of this styling; set against the red satin, the line definitions are highly outstanding, beautifully showcasing the character's body proportions whether sitting or lying sideways.
Great care was also poured into the studio backdrop construction this time, using a large area of red silk as the main background draped over a classical wooden chair, which is both soft and carries the intense heat of the Chinese New Year. Surrounding props, such as the gold ingots on the floor, giant copper coin decorations, and the red scroll with gold characters reading "Gong Xi Fa Cai," make the content of the entire frame highly rich and layered. The glowing wooden lantern on the right side is also a crowning touch; the warm yellow light striking the face and Qipao not only makes the skin tone look more translucent but also neutralizes the intense visual impact brought by the red, adding a touch of softness and warmth to the frame.
In terms of catching postures and facial expressions, to fit the theme of the New Year Qipao, I deliberately avoided overly exaggerated anime poses, opting instead for elegant yet slightly lazy and relaxed sitting postures. For instance, in the fourth photo, sitting on the red cloth with one leg slightly extended forward, paired with transparent wedge heels on the feet, modifies the ankle lines and makes the legs look longer under the wrap of the white stockings. Holding a red and white folding fan single-handed resting on the thigh, paired with a focused, casual gaze toward the lens, avoids looking too forced while beautifully displaying the character's playful and confident temperament.
The actual shooting process was quite a test of technical foundation, because red reflections are extremely strong; a bit of carelessness with lighting will make the skin look dull or overexpose the scene. The photographer spent a lot of time adjusting the top and side lights to ultimately present this visual with clear light/shadow definition and rich colors without losing delicate textures. Meanwhile, the placement positions and angles of props like the folding fan and gold ingots required constant micro-adjustments to ensure that when striking poses, my gaze or hand movements could naturally interact with these items, preventing any awkwardness of floating hands or fake grips.
Overall, this New Year Qipao theme was a highly bold and interesting attempt. On the basis of maintaining the character's original charm, transforming the attire and set through Chinese-style cosplay elements brings a brand-new visual experience to the audience. When everyone shoots this kind of festive theme normally, you can also try this red and gold color-coded combination more often and make good use of the festive items around you—the resulting photos will definitely turn out great.
