This group of Herta cosplay artworks, conceptualized and shot during the Honkai: Star Rail concert period, has finally been filtered down to satisfactory final photos. Madame Herta's elegant, cool, and detached temperament made me put a lot of thought into preparing this outfit, and today I'm here to share the details and feelings behind the shoot with everyone.
To match the cosplay theme related to this concert, we did a highly detailed restoration on the costume. The main color palette adopts a patchwork of deep purple and light blue; this cool-toned combination inherently fits her setting perfectly. The neckline features an exquisite neck ornament paired with pearl chains, and the chest and edges also incorporate black lace and cutout textures, allowing the entire gown to possess both retro elegance and gothic mystery. The cuffs are her iconic wide bell sleeves, specially made from lightweight, breathable material to maintain a crisp silhouette without appearing bloated during shooting. For the hairstyle, a silver-grey long wig was used, with a dark bowknot hair accessory on the crown. Combined overall with purple contact lenses and elegant makeup, it presents a cool, indifferent temperament under the lens.
The venue decoration on the day of the shoot can be considered the soul of this photoset. We chose an indoor study filled with a classical atmosphere as the primary scene. The floor-to-ceiling solid wood bookshelf behind was fully packed with various books, working with the warm yellow built-in lighting to create a quiet and highly scholarly environment. To break up the monotony of a single scene, the photographer specially deployed a cool blue-purple rim light from the front-side toward the figure, forming a sharp contrast of cool and warm tones with the background's warm light. This highly fantastical light and shadow atmosphere allowed me to instantly enter the character state the moment I sat down.
Playing with props was also a huge joy of the shoot. The bone china tea set I held in my hand features intricate patterns and carries a very lightweight texture. When holding it, I had to pay attention to both the curvature of my arms and keep my shoulders relaxed. To capture that composed and unhurried feel of a tea break, we repeatedly adjusted the angle of my elbows and the center of gravity of my upper body many times. The exquisite golden birdcage on the floor to the left of the frame, along with the massive Persian-style patterned carpet underfoot, immensely enriched the image details, making the entire composition look exceptionally full for this Cosplay photography project.
For the mastery of poise, I chose a classic cross-legged sitting posture on a dark, carved wooden armchair. This outfit has a very long train, and how to make the skirt hem spread out naturally and three-dimensionally on the ground was also a focus of repeated straightening on-site. The four photos include a dignified frontal gaze, a side-profile close-up holding the cup, and a more lazy, natural movement of touching the hair accessory. Especially the one with a tilted composition, which has strong visual tension, avoids being rigid, and perfectly captures that composed, lazy, yet slightly proud feel of the character for this Roleplay session.
Being able to restore a beloved character through cosplay and leave images in such a meticulously decorated scene is a highly fulfilling affair. This photoset is both a commemoration of the concert festival and a dedicated interpretation of the character Madame Herta. I hope the light, shadow atmosphere, and details in the photos allow everyone to feel the sincerity and passion of this shoot.
