Checking in on the first day of the winter Firefly ACG Expo, going out on the streets in Tsubaki (Guide) cosplay / Camellya cosplay featuring her casual uniform look from Blue Archive. From equipment selection to prop detail restoration, the photographer and I put a lot of thought into capturing the character's spirit this time. Regarding shooting equipment, this time we used a Nikon Z5 II paired with a Viltrox 50mm F2 Air. The performance of this lens under outdoor natural light is exceptionally solid, with fast autofocusing; the f/2 aperture easily softens and blurs the traffic and fences in the background, making the main character pop instantly. The choice of location wasn't limited inside the convention hall but was instead set by the roadside on the periphery. This semi-outdoor, everyday street scene fits perfectly with the uniform image of a guide who usually maintains order on the roads.
During the shoot, the red signal flag was the finishing touch. In the composition, the bright splash of color from the flag and the highly recognizable red halo above the head formed a clever color echo. To present different states, we tried several camera positions: a standing and saluting directing posture, a squatting-by-the-roadside standby state, and a relaxed moment sitting by the fence for a short break. Black stockings cosplay elements like black stockings, high-heeled black leather shoes paired with a dark blue suit strive to match the texture of the in-game character illustration, while the red bowtie at the neckline serves as an embellishment for the visual center of gravity.
I especially want to mention the winter light and shadow of this shoot. Although the sunshine looked bright, it was, after all, the winter season, so the temperature was actually quite low. The fabric of this suit isn't particularly thick, but to maintain a flat and sharp silhouette in front of the lens, I basically had to rely on heat packs during shooting breaks to sustain my body temperature. However, looking at the straight-out-of-camera color performance of the Nikon Z5 II, almost no major post-production was needed; just using curves to tweak the light and dark contrast a bit was enough to perfectly restore that translucent gloss under the sun. The 50mm focal length is highly practical in an outdoor convention environment like this, as it can capture medium close-ups to show expressions and uniform details, and pulling back slightly can directly fit a full-body standing pose. Walking back and forth to find angles didn't feel like the lens limited my performance, making the whole shooting rhythm very light and brisk. Today's goal was to properly record the cozy atmosphere of the convention's first day through the lens, preserving this relaxed sense of a winter parade in the frames.
