[Hyacinthia Cosplay] Gentleness and Light at the Honkai: Star Rail Convention

The convention photos from the 11.9 Honkai: Star Rail-only event are out! This time I cosplayed Hyacinthia from Honkai: Star Rail.

Preparing for this styling in advance was actually more energy-consuming than expected. The wig styling took about two to three hours to fix; the pink hair strands and the blue-teal gradient at the tips look translucent under natural light, but under the complex overhead lighting of the venue, the layered texture needed extra careful adjustment, otherwise the hair ends would easily look wispy. The small beret on my head was recreated with dark red velvet cloth, with the white fluffy brim hand-sewn, and together with the thin gold ring on top and white bow, the overall accessories were complex yet exquisite.

Regarding the fabric selection for the costume, the outer dark red velvet has a heavy texture, and combined with hand-ironed gold thread embroidered patterns, the actual item looks even more 3D to the naked eye than in photos. The white lantern sleeves and the bow knot at the collar are cotton-linen material, creating a strong contrast while fitting the original fairytale feel well. The huge pair of white feather wings on the back is the soul of the entire look, but its size indeed brought quite a few challenges while walking around the convention. Walking through crowds required constant awareness of distance on both sides to avoid bumping into other attendees' cameras or props. However, this wide wingspan also gave the convention photos much more creative room in composition; when the photographer snapped dynamic shots, the angle of the wings sweeping backward happened to balance the complete visual weight of the subject.

The staff in hand was custom-made; if there was side-backlighting on set, the light transmittance of the glowing blue orb at the top became much more prominent than under indoor lights. The blue lacquer texture on the staff's shaft was very delicate, with the pink ribbon bow tied on it echoing the color of the hair tips. This time I also specifically brought a white unicorn plushie as a prop; its soft plush texture served both as a photo companion after wrapping up and a visual focal guide during shooting, avoiding any potential monotony from single-handed staff holding.

For the lower outfit, it was paired with a white ruffled pleated mini-skirt and opaque White stockings, completed with black platform Mary Jane shoes. This footwear and sock combination naturally extended the leg lines during squatting and sitting poses. There were many different types of lighting equipment in the hall, which required careful exposure control for the White stockings, but fortunately, the photographer handled it with great experience and suppressed the highlights.

On the day of the convention, there were many fellow fans and visitors present; such a group atmosphere actually helped me relax. While waiting between shots, I tried to recall the character's gentle yet somewhat stubborn trait, hoping not to merely "pose" in front of the lens. Convention photos differ from studio shoots in that they lack perfect lighting and absolute quietness, but excel in authenticity and vividness. During the shoot, passing audience members might cast glances, so you have to adjust your state within a split second.

Post-processing this time was mostly completed by myself. Main efforts were spent on suppressing stray ambient light and adjusting skin tone translucency. After all, convention backgrounds tend to be very cluttered, with passersby and light stands creating visual distractions. When editing, I mainly used masks to individually brighten the face and wings while appropriately lowering background brightness, making the red-and-white outfit visually punchier in the frame.

Hyacinthia's core as a character is remarkably resilient; in the narrative arc of Omphalos, she demonstrates a steadfastness that transcends her fairytale exterior. Therefore, during post-processing fine-tuning, I specifically enhanced the clarity of the eyes, wanting to convey that gentle yet rational feeling to viewers as much as possible. Preparing this makeup and outfit required a high time cost, but seeing the final texture delivered in these convention photos made every bit of preparation feel completely worth it. Many fellow fans warmly interacted with me on site, which is probably where the true meaning of an anime convention lies.

Finally, I'd like to thank the photographer on site for the candid snapshots—the angle choices for the entire photo set fit my preset compositions quite well. Throughout the shoot, combining the plushie and staff with wings made movements look lively and logical. Although walking around the floor and posing can be tiring, authentically presenting a piece of this character in front of the camera is a deeply fun experience in itself. The overall convention experience was wonderful, and this styling turned out very photogenic even under complex lighting. As convention photos documenting a full day at the expo, I am extremely satisfied with this quality.
