With Beijing's heat index pushing nearly 40°C, stepping outside was an extreme test of physical endurance. Nozomi and I put our heads together and planned to finish shooting this Arknights set before midday and immediately retreat back to an air-conditioned room, but reality hit the moment we reached the location and instantly began regretting our life choices.
Only a single finished photo made it out this time, but the sheer level of torment behind it went far beyond imagination. The wig was thick and long, leaving the nape of my neck drenched in sweat. Combined with those massive dragon horn props atop my head alongside Nozomi's horns, just standing fully suited in place felt like sitting inside a sauna. To keep the wig from collapsing, we coated it in heavy layers of hairspray, but as the sweat started pouring, the makeup around my face and neck began acting up. My colored contact lenses dried out severely, and keeping my eyes wide open in the blinding daylight to track the camera felt like shooting with literal tears in my eyes.
We deliberately searched for shaded patches, yet the stifling heat made the layers beneath the costume stick uncomfortably to our skin. The high collar of this white shirt was so suffocating it was hard to breathe. Between takes, we leaned against the wall fanning ourselves frantically, trading jokes about whose headpiece weighed more. Nozomi handed me water beside me as we supported each other under the blazing sun, hoping to secure at least a few decent Convention photos before bringing this painful trial to an end.
Thankfully, the photographer worked swiftly, nailing angles and snatching a few sharp frames. The moment the photographer called "wrap," it sounded like music to our ears. The two of us tore off our headgear and props without missing a beat and sprinted straight for the mall—lingering even a minute longer felt like risking heatstroke on the pavement. Gulping down ice water in the cold air-conditioned hall was what finally brought us back to life; our survival was truly courtesy of AC.
While the shooting process was wildly chaotic, enduring the scorching heat to bring these characters to life and seeing the polished styling captured in-camera made all the suffering feel worthwhile. That said, this experience was a stern lesson: never attempt heavy-gear outdoor shoots in midsummer without thinking twice. Hydration and heatstroke prevention are non-negotiable, or the heat will break you entirely.
