This set of photos featuring Flandre Scarlet Cosplay in a kimono from Touhou Project was mainly compiled as a standing Pose reference. To keep the frame completely clean, we opted for a pure white studio shoot, using contrasting tones of vivid red and deep blue to make the subject stand out.
To capture the summer festival atmosphere mentioned in the post, I deliberately chose a modified short-cut red kimono, accessorized with a white half-face mask, a red paper umbrella, and a small pink pouch. When wearing this type of short Kimono cosplay outfit, the key is showcasing the leg lines to add lively energy to the composition. Therefore, during shooting, we avoided straightforward static standing, instead incorporating frequent shifts in the center of gravity.
For instance, in the pose looking back while holding the red umbrella, placing the weight slightly on the back foot while tiptoeing the front foot avoids stiffness while beautifully flattering the legs. While stepping in black-lacquered wooden geta clogs with red cords, keeping the instep arched and taut at all times, coupled with the lines of the leg band, adds depth to the physical details. Additionally, the obi sash, back decorations, and ruffled edges of the cuffs all needed to be displayed naturally through turns and raised arms.
Throughout the shoot, along with the range of motion, guiding the gaze was also crucial. When holding the small pouch or clapping board, my hands didn't grip tightly; rather, they maintained a relaxed ease, as if strolling forward or just coming to a pause. The pink pouch and red umbrella effectively broke up the large expanse of red against the pure white backdrop, providing visual anchors. The lighting in the studio was also specifically tuned, primarily to prevent the reds from oversaturating and to preserve fabric texture and natural skin tones.
In truth, it's often difficult to bring novelty to standing poses in Kimono cosplay, so I experimented with asymmetrical postures—like raising a single arm or slanting one shoulder. Sweeping the wide sleeves with larger movements added dynamic energy to the shots, creating the illusion of wind blowing. Finally, for friends wishing to cosplay this character, feel free to use this as a Pose reference, paying close attention to the side hair buns on the wig and the placement of the headwear and mask, as these are key details for enhancing character recognition.
