[Ganyu Cosplay] Lantern Rite Night Rain: Strolling Through Liyue Harbor with an Umbrella

Choosing to shoot this Lantern Rite themed photoshoot during this time felt like a meticulous recreation of the festival's atmosphere. The moment the oil-paper umbrella in my hand opened, the warm yellow glow emanating from the bamboo-woven lanterns beside me formed a striking visual contrast with the cool blue-gray tones of the outfit—a color contrast that is captivating in a Night portrait.

When settling on this theme, my first consideration was the overall accuracy of makeup and styling. The pair of curled horn headpieces on top of my head, featuring a red-and-black gradient and metallic texture, required special setting and multiple position adjustments to stay faithful to the character design while appearing natural in front of the lens. The light blue-gray long wavy hair was thinned out so it wouldn't look overly heavy while holding the umbrella, while still relying on hair texture to create a flowing effect in the wind.

Outfit details were where the most time was invested for this shoot. The modified off-the-shoulder skirt blending dark and light blue featured a silk-like fabric that reflected light naturally under illumination. The black stand collar and metallic neck pendant at the neckline, alongside the detached sleeve design, needed to maintain crisp structure without restricting arm movement. The gold wavy curve patterns and white flower prints on the dress, combined with the geometric corset belt and red tassels at the waist, were striking visual elements; I repeatedly confirmed their positioning before shooting to prevent wrinkling or deformation during movement. White straps on the legs paired with red-and-black thigh rings not only added depth to the overall look but also gave the character's sharp demeanor a grounded anchor.

Coordinating movements with props also involved considerable care. The oil-paper umbrella had a wooden skeleton and an antiqued light-tea paper canopy. Gripping the umbrella too tightly would make arm lines appear stiff in the photo. For this session, I kept my wrist as relaxed as possible, letting the umbrella incline naturally under its own weight while fine-tuning my center of gravity to align with the camera's vertical perspective. Wooden railings served as a great physical support point, stabilizing the entire composition so the umbrella didn't appear suspended in midair.

As for light and shadow, they are the soul of night portraits. On site, bamboo-woven lanterns served as the ambient main light source; this diffuse light filtering through the bamboo mesh was exceptionally soft, adding a natural rim light to the face that made the skin tone appear translucent. The shimmering water surface in the background and the scattered colorful bokeh in the distance benefited from the high-key overflow effect of a wide-aperture lens, infusing the image with a dreamy, ethereal allure for this Cosplay photography project.

Weaving a subtle mood of "clouds rolling and unrolling, tides rising and falling" into the photos stems from the fact that Lantern Rite itself possesses an enduring charm that renews with time. Based on the character lore, Ganyu carries a narrative weight of watching over the passage of time, which echoes the Lantern Rite theme of "revisiting the past, praying for the present, and looking to the future." When shooting such a scene during Lantern Rite cosplay, it is more than just recreating an anime persona—it aims to convey the quiet strength emitted by the character within a specific cultural context.

Light, atmosphere, and presence converged into a perfect point of balance the moment the shutter pressed. Although walking back and forth at night wearing complex headpieces and carrying a fragile paper umbrella was quite a physical challenge, seeing the final images interwoven with tranquility and Eastern aesthetics made all the effort worthwhile. I suppose this exploration of form, light, shadow, and atmosphere is precisely the part of cosplay as a hobby that fascinates me most.
