[Miyazono Kaori Cosplay] Your Lie in April, Sony A7M5 Straight-Out-of-Camera Spring Images

This time, bringing along the Sony A7M5 and straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) presets, I managed to release this set of photos right at the tail end of April. Capturing a musical instrument girl under the sunlight with a mirrorless camera doesn't require tedious post-processing; the raw image colors are already crisp enough.

This shoot features the character Miyazono Kaori. The combination of blonde twin-tails and a pink-and-white casual outfit (strictly speaking, an everyday-style modification of her performance attire), paired with bright yellow leather shoes, visually matches the spring season beautifully. While preparing props, I intentionally brought along a violin, a melodica, and that iconic red-bottomed case. The location was chosen on a street lined with spring cherry blossoms, with petals scattered across the road surface. Alongside the roadside red-and-white traffic barriers, white railings, and metallic-lustered lampposts, combined with the azure sky, these elements together create a 2D street feel rich with a slice-of-life atmosphere.

In terms of designing poses and movements, to align with the character positioning, I tried my best to capture snapshots of her playing the instruments. In Figure 1, standing on a small path plucking strings, the red case on the ground resembles a brief pause after just rushing from a gig. Figures 2 and 4 both feature her playing the blue melodica—either standing on one foot or blowing while walking, making the actions look lightweight, with light spots hitting the clothes to create a beautiful sense of translucent clarity. Figure 3 shows her carrying the case and walking past the white railings, tilting her head slightly to look into the distance; with the wind gently blowing the ends of her hair, this natural snapshot state carries far more narrative depth than forced posing.

Let's talk about the equipment and settings for this set of images. With the Sony A7M5 as the main body, it performs exceptionally comfortably under outdoor sunlight. This time, I deliberately turned off the complicated post-processing workflow and directly used Sony's SOOC settings. For high-saturation, high-contrast portrait subjects like this, the face recognition of the A7M5 is incredibly accurate; even when the wind blows the hair or when tilting her head to play the melodica, the focus locks tightly onto the eyes. The large-aperture lens brought a beautiful background blur; the layered pinkish-white tones of the cherry blossom trees turned into soft bokeh with the aperture wide open, beautifully accentuating the main character subject. The light was afternoon sun with a bit of warmth, and the side-backlight gave the edges of the golden hair a beautiful rim light, which is exactly the spring feel I wanted for this SOOC portrait.

The weather occasionally brought gusts of wind, causing petals to drift down onto her hair and shoulders. To ensure the success rate of shots during the session, we frequently had to find the balancing point between shutter speed and depth of field amidst dynamic motion. Fortunately, the high-speed continuous shooting of the A7M5 ensured that when capturing scenes of walking while playing the melodica (like in Figure 4), there was no defocusing due to character movement. The overall color temperature leans a tiny bit warm, and the skin texture retains Sony's signature transparency. This straight-out-of-camera effect is highly worry-free, making it almost ready to post raw.

April is coming to an end, and this pink-themed coordination along with the cherry blossoms everywhere indeed serve as the best filters for this season. When shooting this Miyazono Kaori cosplay set, I not only had to consider restoring the character's traits but also wanted to blend the spring's vitality and brightness into the frame. Instruments, streets, blue skies—these elements combined ensure the life force of this set doesn't merely stop at the portrait itself, but integrates the atmosphere of the environment. I hope those who see these photos can also feel a bit of the fine and sunny late spring breeze.
