I shot this set back during Ambience Synesthesia in 2023, and it has been sitting on my hard drive ever since. Now that Ambience Synesthesia 2025 is around the corner, I've finally finished retouching this Phantom Thief w cosplay set from Ambience Synesthesia: Wanted. Truly late-stage procrastination, just like people joke in the comments.
The material of this outfit is quite interesting—primarily glossy black with a latex or patent-leather-like texture, making it stuffy to wear and very prone to attracting dust. On set, the gloss was extremely reflective, requiring careful lighting control to avoid large blown-out highlights that would erase fabric textures. The dark gray concrete underground garage backdrop set off this glossy contrast nicely, and the yellow-bordered wall tiles took on a cooler color temperature under the cool-toned flash.
The red-and-black headpiece combined with the silver-white wig created a high color saturation. The silver-white wig needed frequent grooming to avoid looking frizzy; it tended to stick out during shooting and required hairspray to lock down. The headpiece has a unique horn-like shape and tilts easily if not secured well, something to watch out for when crouching or making larger movements.
The long, thick tail behind me looked very dynamic for side profile glance-backs, but it also restricted movement. Especially for the shot turning sideways with a peace sign, balancing the torso twist while keeping an energetic facial expression took numerous takes before landing a satisfying shot. The gloves were also glossy; after wearing them for a while, hand sweat made the fingers sticky. I also held a white wing-shaped prop with a unique design, which added a nice touch to the poses.
Since this set was shot in an underground garage where ambient light was dim, we relied mainly on artificial lighting. We took many frontal shots, but for this kind of glossy tight-fitting outfit, side and looking-back poses actually looked better visually, showcasing the cutout and strappy back details. The mesh neckline also added complexity—the photographer had to control the lighting carefully, or the mesh pattern would look jarring.
Regarding the 'American cockroach' meme, it's probably because the red-and-black contrast along with the two long antennae really does resemble a giant southern cockroach—my friends often tease me about it when looking at the photos. Posting this set is simply to document the experience. Even though more than a year has passed, this Phantom Thief w look in Arknights remains very distinctive. Looking back at these photos, the vibe feels a bit different compared to now. I didn't overcomplicate post-processing—mostly balancing the background light and ensuring the skin tones looked natural.
The main issue was simply taking too many shots, making photo selection tough and fueling the delay. The costume was genuinely hot, and to maintain the look we couldn't turn on AC, so I had to wipe off sweat after every pose—once I sweated, the wig stuck to my neck uncomfortably. In the end, I picked these three shots: one frontal, one three-quarter back, and one pointing at the camera, capturing that special moment. With tickets for Ambience Synesthesia 2025 already secured, it feels like a continuation of this photoshoot from back then. Life always moves forward, and occasionally revisiting old photos and reminiscing about the hard work of Cosplay photography is its own kind of joy.
