[Kunikida Hanamaru cosplay] Love Live! Sunshine!!: A Vibrant Bloom of the Yellow Butterfly Fairy

This Kunikida Hanamaru cosplay shoot has finally wrapped up smoothly. To achieve the most ideal visual impact outdoors, I began organizing the costume and props two weeks in advance. This yellow stage costume demands great patience with its fine details—particularly the orange-and-white checkerboard motif across the collar, which had to be perfectly aligned to avoid looking cheap. The white contour lines on the jacket and the sequined fabric along the cuffs produced a stunning, luminous texture under sunlight. To channel the character's buoyant energy, the makeup emphasized eye-enlarging techniques and radiant cheek blush, paired with high-saturation amber-brown contact lenses. Styling the wig was equally deliberate: the blunt bangs and face-framing side layers required multiple trims to look effortless and soft rather than stiff.

On the day of the shoot, we chose a verdant park setting where surrounding shrubs and foliage provided an organic, high-contrast backdrop. The photographer operated an α7 IV paired with the FE 50mm F1.2 GM lens—a setup that performed brilliantly outdoors. The creamy bokeh generated by the ultra-wide aperture softened the foliage cleanly, making the subject and the Butterfly wings prop on my back command the frame.

The butterfly wings served as the centerpiece of this shoot. Because the prop is quite wide, I had to remain mindful of framing angles to prevent the wing tips from warping in perspective or snagging on branches. To do justice to the midriff-baring design, I engaged in targeted core workouts beforehand to ensure toned, clean lines. For posing, I explored diverse playful gestures: forming finger hearts, resting a hand on the cap brim, or lightly tapping my chin. The yellow flared skirt, detailed with blue and orange triangular pennants, held an airy bounce during motion; paired with mid-calf black boots, it captured that classic, adorable 2D anime stage presence.

Outdoor portrait photography is always beholden to ambient weather. Fortunately, overcast skies granted soft, diffused illumination that eliminated harsh downward shadows. The photographer guided me to interact naturally with the greenery—standing before dense shrubbery so darker foliage tones naturally depressed the background, allowing the vibrant stage colors to pop. Navigating turns while wearing broad butterfly wings was physically cumbersome, yet seeing the previews on the camera screen validated every ounce of effort. With such high chromatic saturation across the fabrics, post-production color grading called for careful highlight retention to preserve the textural micro-details in the yellows and oranges while maintaining a translucent, glowing complexion.

The entire shoot was far more than an aesthetic showcase—it was a heartfelt embodiment of Hanamaru's lively, wholesome charm. Bringing a cherished character into three dimensions and immortalizing her through the lens brings profound creative fulfillment.
