For this shoot, we selected outdoor grey brick pavement as the primary set. Details of the props and costume occupied a large proportion of the frame, especially the pearl chains around the neck and the white wing-shaped headpiece, which needed careful coordination with the light to avoid overexposure from reflections. The dark purple-black long hair featured purplish-red gradient highlights at the tips; sunlight striking the hair strands made the colors more dynamic while creating a subtle visual contrast between the hair's layered texture and the dark-toned costume.
Regarding this styling, I'm personally very satisfied with the Atmospheric makeup, particularly the eye makeup. I used bright blue contact lenses to match the character's gaze, intentionally adding dotted and watery totem-like smudged shading beneath the eyes. Paired with straight brows and a matte nude lipstick, I aimed to convey that aloof detachment and focused intensity that keeps others at a distance. Distinct from a sweet, smiling style, this gaze of distant reserve feels much closer to the character's core lore. Wearing the rigid white wing-like headpiece required meticulous care, as even a slight misalignment would look asymmetrical, and I had to continually adjust the bangs between takes to keep them from being flattened by the headpiece.
The costume itself features intricate fabric choices and tailoring, splicing dark blue and black-purple as the main colorway, accented by three-dimensional white skeletal or leaf-vein piped outlines across the chest. The fabric is relatively structured, holding the garment's silhouette cleanly. The black sheer tulle draped over the shoulders softens these rigid lines, adding a touch of haziness and vulnerability. The handheld black-and-white checkered chessboard card prop was the focal anchor of the day's composition; during shooting, this card easily produced glare, requiring constant angle adjustments based on the sun's position. The subtle red detailing on the side of the prop served as a great accent, popping out from the predominantly blue-and-black palette to give the hands a visual resting point.
On the day of the shoot, we worked under outdoor natural light without extra fill strobes, making the low-angle upward shots heavily reliant on ambient diffusion. The photographer used a low-angle upward perspective throughout, pairing it with a wide aperture to blur out background clutter and foreground edge distractions, locking the focus onto my face and upper body. Cinematic visual storytelling like the foreground-occluded framing in Photo 2, despite partially masking the subject, actually creates a voyeuristic or situational immersion that amplifies the frame's narrative tension. I personally prefer this compositional freedom over staring stiffly at the lens.
When posing, to align with the theme of "my sword dances only for Caesar's suspicion," I had to channel that psychological mindset of "holding a blade yet remaining ever-vigilant." Although not holding a real weapon, I treated the checkered card as a token or an instrument of direction. The tension in my wrists had to stay relaxed rather than stiff to keep the card grip natural, while my gaze remained slightly detached with a subtle edge of sharp scrutiny. This was my first time attempting a persona tinged with this melancholy and guarded vigilance. The gravitational pull of the wig and headpiece was certainly a test for my neck and scalp, but once locked into the character's emotion, physical discomfort was easy to overlook.
Compared to studio shoots, Outdoor cosplay brings far more uncontrollable spontaneity—such as ground reflections and the gazes of passersby. Yet these authentic outdoor elements are precisely what make the fusion between 2D characters and the 3D real world so magical in Anime-style photography. We meticulously refined the makeup and accessory details, and the overall atmosphere achieved our intended standard. Every attempt at a different style and character challenges one's control over facial expressions and posture. The photographer's upward angle also magnified the character's haughty, cold commanding presence. I hope everyone can feel the calm, resolute strength conveyed in these photos.
