[Black★Rock Shooter cosplay] Black Highlight Moments at the CPGZ Comic Convention

The CPGZ Comic Convention venue was bustling with crowds, and I had been wearing this Black★Rock Shooter battle suit all day. Shuttling between various booths, aside from the air conditioning blowing directly inside the venue, the actual temperature of this outfit wasn't as extreme as imagined, making it relatively comfortable in terms of practicality, but the weight was indeed a major issue.

To recreate the character's iconic high twin tails, the wig used over half a kilogram of hair fiber. To keep the twin tails standing firmly, a rigid wire mesh support was stuffed inside, along with a massive amount of hairspray for setting. To keep this wig securely on my head, hair clips were strategically placed across several load-bearing points. Combined with light grey-blue contact lenses and detailed eye accents, when the whole hair and makeup look was completed, the burden on my neck alone made me feel like 20% of my stamina was depleted before the convention even began.

For clothing, I chose a glossy patent leather jacket. This material's texture photographed exceptionally well under the reflective lighting from the convention hall's ceiling. The large white star emblem on the chest was custom-made and attached separately. With the silver zipper half-unzipped, paired with the creased lines of the patent leather, it visually broke up the dullness of pure black. Compared to many complex layered armors or ornate long gowns, this Black★Rock Shooter cosplay outfit is actually quite sleek, but patent leather jacket material itself lacks elasticity, limiting my arm range of motion when navigating the crowded venue. However, thinking about how accurately it recreates that cool and sharp visual impression, these physical inconveniences were well worth ignoring.

But one thing left me quite puzzled. Walking down the main aisle inside the hall, many photographers carrying heavy gear passed by, and some even walked past me several times, yet almost nobody directly called out the character's name or tapped my shoulder for photos. Standing there for a while, some passersby even asked if I was cosplaying an original character. This felt quite unreasonable; the classic character image from the original work is so recognizable, and combined with this patent leather jacket and twin tails, it logically should have been recognized at a glance. I wonder if it's because the concentration of fanworks for currently trending series at the convention was so high that everyone was focused on currently airing anime, diluting attention for classic veteran characters at anime conventions.

Of course, not being surrounded by crowds had its perks—it meant I could walk around the venue much more freely. This time I specifically prepared many free distribution postcards, styled in standard Polaroid dimensions, with an outdoor shot I was very satisfied with printed on the back. Seeing the quiet reception on site, I decided to take the initiative: whenever I bumped into fellow fans or friendly-looking passersby, I tapped their shoulders to give them one. Many who received the postcards stopped to look closely, then handed back small merchandise or candies they had brought. This exchange of physical items felt much warmer than simply standing there being photographed as part of Coser daily life.

By afternoon, lights inside the hall gradually turned on, and I took the opportunity to shoot several half-body close-ups under cool-toned light sources in the venue. The main focus was on the reflective sheen of the patent leather jacket and whether the wig's frizziness remained in its freshly set state. Overall, this outfit offers great photo efficiency—without needing overly complex poses, simply standing there, half-unzipping the jacket, or casting a slightly distant gaze quickly brings out that cold and hard aesthetic. If I cosplay Black★Rock Shooter in this outfit again, I might consider switching to a more spacious studio setting with sharply structured lighting. This experience at the CPGZ Comic Convention, despite the surprisingly low recognition rate from passersby, offered a very fun overall experience distributing freebies and exploring the convention. With all postcards handed out and my steps growing heavy, the day drew to a close amidst the convention's bustle and the company of this battle suit.
