The focus of this shoot was to showcase Seele's delicate yet resolute inner heart through the set design of red maples and festive decorations. The studio chosen featured a traditional wooden structure with dark solid wood flooring and classic Chinese carved lattice screens in the background, visually matching the aesthetic interplay of tradition and modernity in Honkai Impact 3rd. On the day of the shoot, artificially arranged red lanterns and decorative golden branches interspersed among them became the warmest sources of light and shadow. To achieve the best atmosphere, we specially prepared red banners with black calligraphy, giving the already festive scene an added touch of profound traditional heritage.
In terms of costume selection, the two characters' looks had distinct differences. Veliona's (Dark Seele) outfit features a black-and-red color block with a sleeveless, backless design, inherently radiating a sleek and bold aura. Paired with white fur trim along the edges and fiery red high heels, it effectively highlights bodily lines whether standing or leaning back. Meanwhile, Seele's (Light Seele) look centers on a blue-and-white tone with rich skirt layering; dark blue fabric weaves together with white-and-silver patterns. Combined with a lightweight texture, it creates a lovely flowing effect when moving. The white high heels worn during the shoot echoed the blue-and-white long dress, making the overall color palette look remarkably clean. The wig styling was also recreated faithfully—whether pure black or the two-tone blue-black short hair, both displayed a glossy sheen under the studio lights, with hair strand texture handled meticulously.
The duo interaction attempted this time was both the difficulty and the highlight of the entire photo set. Since Light Seele and Dark Seele have starkly different core personalities, expressing this contrast through body language and eye contact in front of the camera was the key point of our repeated on-site discussions. When shooting the side-by-side lying composition in Photo 1, to achieve a state of relaxed yet connected intimacy, we had to repeatedly adjust the angle of head tilts and hand placements so that the red maple leaves and wooden floor merged seamlessly into the background. In the scene where both players tugged on red silk, the tension applied to the prop needed precise control to let the silk drape into a natural flowing arc while ensuring our gazes aligned accurately—often requiring numerous attempts for a single perfect moment.
Photographer WiFi was extremely professional with on-site direction, not only planning the overall grand scene for us but also designing distinct lighting setups for individual close-ups and duo wide shots. A side-backlight in the studio was particularly exquisite, illuminating the dried yellow wheat stalks and red maple leaves to create a warm yellow tone akin to a setting sun, giving the rim light on skin a very soft texture. When shooting solo shots, such as holding the red banner or sitting with a folding fan, special attention had to be paid to tension in the waist, core, and shoulders, as this affected whether the outfit maintained a crisp, flattering fit for the character on camera. Prop usage was another highlight of this set; holding the giant red banner gave a substantial feel, and unfolding it or leaning it against the side served as a wonderful visual extension that kept compositions from feeling monotonous.
My greatest feeling while roleplaying Seele is that at her core lies a power yearning to break free from shackles and a deep desire to protect others. The shooting process was not merely recreating her look, but interpreting her growth in the game's story with emotional resonance. In this set where classical Chinese style interweaves with fantasy, looking through the lens made me feel as if I had truly stepped into that world full of the unknown yet filled with warmth. Presenting that image—at times fragile, at times courageous—through photography language was a deeply meaningful experience for me. The team working together this time had incredible chemistry, exerting full effort from set design to lighting adjustments to match the character's settings. These moments frozen in a studio filled with red maples and lanterns are not just recording an anime cosplay session, but also a deeply immersive creative journey. As long as you feel the character's core with your heart, you will always find the expression that best connects with her soul.
