This shooting was chosen in the alleys of the old town, mainly because of the mottled walls and intricate pipes here, which fit the original work's oppressive yet slightly absurd daily feel very well. As soon as you step into this alley, you can feel the interwoven atmosphere of worldly life and decadence, which matches the overall vibe of Chainsaw Man very well.
In terms of clothing, I chose a white sleeveless shirt paired with a black high-waisted short skirt. To increase the layering, I specially matched it with Black stockings over-the-knee long socks and chunky-heeled small leather shoes. This outfit indeed makes the legs look very long visually and brings a touch of sexiness, but in actual execution, squatting on the rough concrete ground wearing over-the-knee socks is truly a test of balance and endurance. The edges of the socks bite into the legs, and legs going numb from squatting for a long time is an everyday occurrence.
The wig used is a grayish-toned short purple hair, with the stray hairs and layering at the edges intentionally preserved during trimming. To maintain the hair texture, a lot of hair wax and setting spray were used. In terms of makeup, the depth of the eye area was heavily emphasized, the eyeliner slightly upturned, and the lip color chose a higher saturation red to fit the character's detached yet slightly dangerous setting. The base makeup deliberately pursued a matte texture; although there aren't many overall colors, every detail needed careful refinement to make the frame look more authentic and natural.
The photographer's composition is extremely clever, utilizing the depth of the alley itself to place the character in the center of the frame. I maintained a squatting posture with my hands crossed and pressed together in front of my face, looking straight into the lens. To capture the most natural state, this posture was repeated several times, with core muscles constantly exerting force to keep the body from swaying while maintaining a calm facial expression. Although this body language looks simple, conveying emotion in a static pose requires constant adjustment of breathing and line-of-sight angles.
There are actually a lot of debris and trash cans around, but these were not deliberately avoided; instead, they became natural worldly props in the frame. The light was relatively soft without strong direct sunlight, saving a lot of tedious lighting setup and directly using natural light to create a cold, moody atmosphere. Occasionally, passing residents curiously taking a glance was also an interesting minor episode during the shoot. To capture the best of that crisp, cold feeling, we waited until the light angle was most appropriate before pressing the shutter.
Finding a clean composition in such a rundown environment is actually quite difficult, which requires us to do addition in styling and body language, and subtraction in the selection of environmental elements. This attempt gave me a new understanding of the integration of scenes and characters. It's not only gorgeous studio shoots that can produce good photos; this kind of realistic feel with a touch of worldly life is equally impactful. Although the entire shooting process was tiring, looking at that unique atmosphere in the final photos made all the fatigue vanish into thin air. I hope this set of pictures can present a different sense of story.
