Cutting straight to the chase, let me share the entire process behind shooting Touhou Project's Scarlet Devil Mansion mistress, Remilia Scarlet. The preparation cycle was quite extensive—from tailoring the costume to selecting props, every step took serious effort. To immerse the frame in that mysterious and opulent ambiance fitting the Scarlet Devil Mansion, I specifically scouted a studio featuring vintage carved woodwork and a dark crimson velvet sofa. The giant luminous clock face and Gothic dark wrought-iron silhouettes in the background, paired with the cool deep-blue ambient lighting crafted by the photographer, created a striking visual contrast against the character's red-and-white dress.
Let's first talk about the makeup and styling that many are curious about. For the wig, I selected a light blue wavy bob with neatly trimmed straight bangs, accented on both sides of the head with white lace ribbons securing red roses and crimson bows. To accentuate the physical traits of a Vampire, the eye makeup made generous use of crimson hues, complemented by red colored contacts, bold red lipstick, and intentionally paled foundation. The dress embodies classic Gothic Lolita styling with intricate tailoring: the neckline, cuffs, chest, and skirt tiers are heavily stacked with multiple layers of lace, ruffles, and translucent chiffon. While looking exceptionally gorgeous when worn, it carries substantial weight; taking off, putting on, and moving around in those wide bell sleeves and layered ruffles required utmost care. The small red devil wings on my back were sculpted using thin wire and specialty craft paper, anchored to the inner back lining of the outfit; ensuring they wouldn't wobble or expose riggings on camera required testing and fine-tuning angles multiple times beforehand.
The lower body was paired with white jacquard mesh tights and red pointed-toe high heels. Because the skirt is relatively short and multi-layered, showing off the leg silhouette in these seated poses became particularly crucial. In the first shot, I chose an upright sit on the sofa, holding the replica skull gently near my cheek with both hands while gazing straight into the lens to convey an aloof sense of dominance unique to a Vampire. In the second shot, I transitioned into a slightly more dramatic pose with legs crossed, raising one hand into an elegant gesture while naturally spreading the other outward. This posture lengthened the limbs while comprehensively showcasing the garment's structure and the delicate pattern details of the Stockings cosplay. In the third shot, leaning slightly to the side while resting the skull in one hand and extending the legs at an angle created a much more languid, relaxed posture.
The floor of the studio featured dark reflective tiles. Along the edge of the frame, I placed a goblet filled with crimson liquid and casually set down another skull, enriching the scene's storytelling. The gaffer used broad blue ambient lighting as the foundational tone, while softening fill lights in front to guarantee crisp facial clarity and smooth shadow transitions. The entire shoot was a physical challenge, requiring prolonged holds of poised seated postures in high heels and layered garments. Bringing together these new explorations in lighting and composition, I truly hope to convey my genuine interpretation of Remilia Scarlet cosplay.
