The set design for this shoot established a atmosphere blending ink wash elements and fantasy right from the beginning. Jagged black artificial rocks served as accents, draped with semi-translucent gauze covered in wild cursive calligraphy. Combined with the floor reflections simulating splashed ink, the sense of a visual centerpiece throughout the space was exceptionally strong.
Outfit-wise, it features a modified design dominated by cyan and white with red and orange accents, paired with a wide black outer robe. This conveys both an ethereal, cool elegance and a striking visual contrast in layers. The green horn accessories and pointed ears on my head displayed very dimensional rim lighting under the cool-toned side-backlight. The photographer's control over light positioning and focal length gave the character a dramatic tension as if "bursting forth from the scroll" amidst the calligraphy backdrop.
We prepared several sets of props for cooperation this time. Holding a writing brush while unrolling a long scroll, the custom textures of the calligraphy brush and scroll handles looked refined, with the vermilion seal and landscape patterns providing great elements for shots. After finishing that set, I switched to posing with a long sword. The intricate red patterns and tassel pendant on the blade served as excellent accents against the cooler tones. Transitioning from the scholarly demeanor of holding a brush to the sharp, spirited posture of wielding a sword, changing props also drove adjustments in my expressions and posture.
A challenging aspect during shooting was keeping the long scroll rigid and expanded; holding it for a long time made my wrist quite sore, yet I had to maintain a relaxed and natural pose in front of the lens without showing fatigue. Paired with on-site fog effects and floor reflections captured through the lens, it ultimately delivered a more serene ambiance than expected.
During post-processing retouching, the primary consideration was overall color unity. While maintaining the cyan-blue ambient tones, skin tones and localized highlights were softened to avoid making the model look sickly pale or jarring in a cool-toned environment, while preserving the vividness of the red-orange sashes and sword patterns. Although the post caption features poetic expressions like "If it's known to be a dream, why wake?" or "as graceful as a startled swan and elegant as a roaming dragon," in actual practice, we mostly subtracted elements to keep the image clean and lighting direct, letting the artistic atmosphere speak through the photographic language itself.
In terms of clothing and footwear pairing, the combination of short garments with bare legs and black short boots maintained outfit completeness while offering more flexible range of motion for poses like squatting or side-sitting. When posing, I had to repeatedly seek balance and body position to ensure limbs looked extended without blocking the calligraphy background or foreground landscape props. Every frozen moment was the result of seamless coordination among makeup, lighting, and shutter release. Recreating this character offered a firsthand experience of the fresh spark between traditional ink wash elements and modern Chinese-style cosplay photography—such immersive participation is a deeply rewarding ancient style photoshoot experience in itself.
