[Hatsune Miku cosplay] VOCALOID Princess Knight: Sword Energy Atop the Rooftop

The entire process of shooting this Hatsune Miku Princess Knight concept was actually much more complex than it looks. During the costume prep stage, the main challenge was maintaining the drape and fullness of the white dress; the inner ruffles required individual ironing and shaping, otherwise they would collapse when caught by the wind outdoors. The dress has a very snug waist, which, paired with a custom dark blue cross-body strap and a thigh ring, flatters the proportions nicely. The skirt hem was key—handling the multiple layers of lace trim required extra care, as being too stiff would look like lingerie, while being too soft wouldn't hold its shape. Regarding the choice of White stockings, to avoid excessive glare or sheer transparency that looks artificial, I spent a long time searching for a high-density, opaque fabric. Paired with dark blue high heels, standing for a long time was exhausting due to the high heel height, so cushioning pads had to be placed at the toes to prevent blisters. The heel height was also tested beforehand to ensure stability while elongating the leg line, requiring me to constantly adjust the pressure points on the balls of my feet throughout the shoot.

The wig was a teal twin-tail style. The long tails were very heavy and had to be anchored securely to the back of the head with a wig cap and bobby pins; otherwise, moving would pull painfully on the scalp. To convey an airy, floating feel in the first full-body action shot, we did several retakes, fine-tuning the placement of the wig alongside the wind to capture a natural fluttering still effect. The inertia of the heavy twin tails when turning the head was substantial, requiring practice beforehand to control head movements. The prop sword was made of aluminum alloy, with its center of gravity leaning forward. The basket hilt added significant weight; holding the close-up pose in the third photo with the sword tip pointing at the lens required tightening core muscles and using the elbow as a fulcrum to prevent trembling hands. In contrast, leaning on the sword tip in the first full-body shot was much less strenuous, and angling the body slightly outlined the silhouette well.

The backdrop was set on a high-rise city terrace, primarily utilizing a large aperture to blur the skyscrapers in the background, focusing attention onto the dress and sword. The wind on the rooftop was fierce—both an advantage and a hurdle. While it gave dynamic motion to the hem and wig, it easily blew bangs across the eyes, requiring the shutter to be pressed precisely between gusts. In terms of lighting, the soft dusk light suited the white-dominated outfit best, and directing the reflector onto the White stockings enhanced their sheen. Post-processing mainly involved balancing the white balance to preserve the purity of teal, white, and navy blue, while slightly cooling down the architectural tones to create a warm-and-cool contrast with the subject. Due to unpredictable rooftop gusts, considerable time was spent managing the skirt hem. Overall, this Cosplay photoshoot balanced costume detail with a vivid anime aesthetic, marking a very consistent shooting experience. For the next action set, I plan to experiment with side backlighting to enhance silhouette contours. Regarding site logistics, terrace access needed prior coordination, and weather forecasts had to be monitored closely. Although the weather was clear that day, the wind was biting. The assistant had to bend down constantly with the reflector to keep the light steady on the stockings. Reviewing the finished pictures, we prioritized keeping the layered folds of the skirt and the highlights on the blade sharp. Recreating the drape of the outfit, the bell-curve of the petticoat, and the positioning of the thigh ring made this a deeply satisfying endeavor, and I look forward to refining my facial expressions even further.
