Sharing a set of Okita Souji cosplay works recently shot on a snowy night. In Fate/Grand Order, she possesses a cool, detached yet decisive temperament, and her Shinsengumi lore fills the character with dramatic tension. This shoot was deliberately located in an outdoor snowy field during winter, combined with night ambiance, aiming to deliver a sense of solemnity distinct from indoor studio shoots.
Starting with the head styling, I used a light-blonde short wig with straight bangs. The hair strands were smooth and sufficiently thick to maintain a natural state in wind and snow. Paired with gray-green contact lenses and subtle red flush around the eye contours, facial sharpness was intentionally softened in makeup to introduce a touch of sickly frailty, fitting closer to original illustration atmospheres. The headband was her iconic white cloth band inset with a silver metal plate featuring rivets; tightness was repeatedly adjusted during wear to keep it upright on top while maintaining a natural cling to the scalp.
Next is the overall costume coordination. The outer layer is a light blue-green Japanese style cosplay coat featuring intricate dark patterned weaves that showed pronounced texture under snow reflections and streetlights. Two thick white hemp ropes passed through both shoulders; the hemp rope material was quite stiff and didn't deform easily during movement. The inner layers formed a multi-layered white and black structure, with the black neck scarf being a major highlight—blocking wind while defining neck layering cleanly. Matte black gloves were worn on the hands, offering just the right friction when holding the Katana.
The prop in hand was a white-hilted Katana, with a white scabbard paired with a golden handguard and white-and-black woven cord wrapped around the hilt. Offering moderate weight, it felt great in hand whether standing or kneeling. During the night shoot, I directly utilized a large F2.8 aperture paired with ISO 800 to handle low-light environments. Figure 5, showing the Katana held at night under streetlight illumination while looking toward the lens, created strong visual storytelling.
Figures 1 through 5 present character styling perspectives, whereas Figure 9 featuring blood effect shots represents an added dramatic touch. Kneeling on one knee over frozen snow, looking at red pigment on my hands and mottled marks in the snow, I truly immersed myself in the emotion of a character pushed to limits yet clinging tightly to her blade. The historical background of the Shinsengumi carries a hint of tragedy and resolve, which harmonized remarkably well when expressed through vast winter snowscapes.
The temperature in the early morning was extremely low, and stepping on snow produced crisp crunching sounds. Because light was very dim, actual shooting relied on local streetlamps and personal light setups. The F2.8 large aperture helped immensely, yielding excellent separation between subject and background. RAW format retained abundant detail, allowing highlights and shadows to be recovered easily, which proved highly beneficial for post-production adjustments.
Walking in the snow in this outfit naturally leads one to feel the character's state of mind at the time. The moment my hand gripped the Katana hilt, all fatigue and cold felt like integral parts of the shoot's atmosphere. This winter Snow photoshoot attempt was not only about restoring character appearance, but also aimed to convey Okita Souji's loneliness and tenacity during her Shinsengumi era through the interplay of environment and light. I hope this photo set allows everyone to feel the character's unique charm in the snowy night.
