[Altria cosplay] Fate/Grand Order: Insights on Styling My King

When shooting this set, I happened to be catching up on the Fate storyline, which sparked the urge to do an Altria (Our King) cosplay. Since Fate/Grand Order portrays her as a big eater, I used "Time to Eat! Time to Eat!" as the post title—an inside joke familiar to all of us fans.

Lighting choice during the shoot was crucial; I primarily used oblique side lighting to create a softer, more three-dimensional facial contour. The key focus for makeup and styling was shaping the bangs on the blonde wig. It required a generous amount of hair wax and setting spray to maintain a soft, natural curve that drapes smoothly. For the colored contacts, I deliberately picked large-diameter emerald green lenses. Paired with defined eyeliner and reddish-brown eyeshadow, they produced that signature anime catchlight—simultaneously vibrant, dynamic, and majestic.

For the costume, the white ruffles around the collar needed fluffing up to accentuate the face. The dark blue fabric has great texture, and the black ribbon at the bow tie required precise adjusting to drape gracefully at the collarbone. I added shoulder pads during the shoot because her outfit features structured shoulders, and cinched the waist tightly to support the regal presence of the dress. Getting dressed was quite an intricate process, particularly tying the back laces by myself, so for the front-facing close-ups, I simply left the back laces loosened to keep the composition clean.

Regarding posing, since many were shot from selfie-style angles, I used slightly high-angle perspectives looking downward to highlight the collar and gaze, which flattered body proportions without feeling forced. The photographer also captured a few profile shots to showcase the silhouette. The cover photo I chose uses a slightly tilted angle with a downward gaze, giving off a confident, composed vibe.

For retouching, I preserved natural skin texture rather than excessively smoothing it, which would otherwise look artificial and flat. In the makeup, I emphasized clean lines across the eyeliner and lip contour. Since I had a busy schedule back then, organizing and editing the set took considerable effort, as I spent hours polishing tiny details like the flatness of the ruffles. Fully recreating the aura of an anime character is genuinely challenging; costume, makeup, expression, and even contact lens diameter must align seamlessly. In particular, the king's unique blend of majesty and cuteness relies on a clear, focused gaze paired with subtly upturned corners of the mouth. The raw photos turned out very well, so I published them with simple color grading—leaning toward cooler tones to complement that mysterious, noble atmosphere.

Reflecting on the overall experience: while this outfit is stunning, wearing it is exhausting. The petticoat and heavy hemline severely restricted movement to the point where I nearly tripped. Still, out of love for the character, overcoming these hurdles was entirely worthwhile. I hope sharing these shooting notes and detailed adjustments conveys the dedication put into portraying this character.
