[Chien Wu Cosplay] Azur Lane's Qipao Charm: A Clash of Retro Atmosphere and High Slits

Slipping into this modified blue high-slit qipao, combined with the light and shadow of the vintage set, instantly brought out the mature, commanding presence of the entire look.

The color palette for this outfit is very bold: red floral embroidery across a royal blue satin base creates a delicate satin sheen under warm studio lights, striking a vivid yet harmonious color contrast. The halter-neck cut completely reveals the shoulders and neckline, while the pink translucent tulle floral accent on the chest provides a great textural contrast with the pearl necklace at the collar, offering rich visual depth. The high slit at the bottom serves as the centerpiece of this Qipao cosplay, which, paired with over-the-knee black stockings for a Black tights outfit and glossy deep blue-purple high heels, visually elongates the leg lines while delivering a restrained yet striking aesthetic.

For the hairstyle, I went with classic straight black short hair with sharply trimmed bangs to evoke a cool, crisp aura. The blue floral hairpiece on top echoes the base color of the qipao, making the entire styling cohesive. Red contact lenses combined with warm-toned eyeshadow and blush balanced the aloofness of the cool blue-and-black tones, focusing visual attention on the face.

Regarding the set design, I especially fell in love with this Retro atmosphere of a vintage mansion. The deep red velvet curtains framed the subject like a stage, accompanied by a classic brass-horn gramophone beside me, and dark solid wood bookshelves along with a studded dark brown leather sofa in the back—every detail exuded a rich vintage flavor. The black-and-white checkerboard floor tiles further added geometric structure and spatial depth to the frame.

To enrich the visual layers, I brought along an off-white semi-sheer long scarf during the shoot, which could be casually draped over the shoulders or wrapped around the elbows. When posing, the scarf's soft drape eased the sharp edge of the high-slit qipao, adding an airy, graceful flow. The photographer paid close attention to the interplay of light and shadow: the key light cast highlights across the qipao's satin fabric, creating a dramatic chiaroscuro contrast against the shadowed curtains and elevating the cinematic feel to the maximum. When shooting seated poses, I had to keep the fabric smooth at all times to prevent unnatural creasing along the high slit, ensuring the clean, elongated leg lines remained perfectly fluid.

I believe the true meaning of cosplay extends beyond surface-level imitation; it is a visual expression of a character's core temperament. Although grounded in a qipao base, this look incorporates numerous modern and anime elements, such as the off-the-shoulder halter structure and the oversized corsage accent, requiring a balance between character lore and personal interpretation. Throughout the shoot, body angles were adjusted repeatedly to convey that proud, confident, and slightly mysterious gallant vibe. Both the prep styling and post-processing adhered to a vintage film aesthetic, avoiding overly saturated colors in favor of natural light-and-shadow transitions to deliver a timeless texture. This set not only captured the charm of the character herself, but also provided me with an incredibly enjoyable retro studio photography experience.
