[Megumi Kato Cosplay] Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend - Restoring That Ordinary Campus Daily Life

This shoot chose a classroom filled with student-day memories as the main stage, aiming to capture Megumi Kato's naturally flowing authenticity through this set of photos. As a pure and elegant cosplayer, when preparing this photoset, I kept thinking about how to balance the character's "diluted presence" trait while retaining a sufficiently appealing visual focal point in the frame, converting the 2D flat feeling into a vivid 3D atmosphere.

For the outfit, I chose a classic sailor suit paired with a red bow tie. The red bow tie on my chest serves to brighten up the overall blue-and-white base tone, preventing the frame from looking dull due to large areas of cool colors. The white plush hat is the soul accessory of the entire styling, its fluffy texture adding visual softness and making the character more recognizable. As for props, I specifically prepared old Japanese magazines and a stack of heavy books, which were highly practical during the shoot. They helped me get into character faster, whether posing in thought with my hand on my cheek or naturally flipping through pages, adding a sense of daily storytelling to the frame as if it were a real snippet of a recess break.

The greatest impression from this shoot was the stunning effect of the 85mm f/1.2 large aperture lens. Combined with the natural light diffusing through the window, the transition from the foreground to the background is extremely soft, with a buttery, cream-like bokeh that completely isolates the character from the cluttered classroom environment. Although the large aperture posed a considerable challenge to focusing, the final clear, layered, and transparent texture fits the Japanese-style girl aesthetic of fresh J-cosplay photography perfectly. Regarding composition, I experimented with multiple poses, including hand on cheek, saluting, running hands through my hair, looking back, and looking down, striving to present a lazy yet lively vibe.

For the makeup, I deliberately chose a light and natural look. Megumi Kato's charm largely stems from her non-threatening "ordinariness." No heavy makeup is needed; a delicate base makeup, natural eyeliner, paired with original lip color are enough to bring out her clear, transparent quality. Meanwhile, I also understand that cosplay photography is not just about wearing the right clothes, but more about conveying the character's expressions, utilizing gazes and subtle body language to get closer to the character's soul, sending that cool yet playful feeling right through the screen.

Although I'm not an elite cosplayer with thousands of shoots under my belt, I personally value the visual quality of every project highly. Before this shoot, I did thorough homework in advance and repeatedly discussed the desired light and shadow vibe with the photographer. The results proved that the ambient light and my skin tone blended incredibly naturally, achieving that clear and transparent effect with breathing room that I had envisioned. We shot under the afternoon sun, with the sunlight casting geometric lines of light and shadow across the desks. Even without much post-processing, the atmospheric photography vibe was completely maxed out. Although this styling is simple, the clever combination of props and scenes, along with the soft texture bestowed by the light, gives these photos a very enduring quality—like a storytelling vintage photo, yet filled with bright, youthful energy.
