The sea breeze at Iyo Shimonada still lingers vividly in my memory. Last summer, photographer @Sato and I caught the China Eastern regional flight and traveled down the line to reach this unmanned seaside station. The route wasn't entirely smooth—flying from Shanghai to Matsuyama, then transferring to a local slow train—but the moment I stepped off and saw that sparkling ocean, every bit of travel fatigue vanished.
To complement the blue skies and ocean, I chose a classic blue-and-white sailor-style JK uniform. Knee-high White stockings paired with brown penny loafers, holding a hefty student schoolbag on the platform—it felt as though time itself had ground to a halt. A soft pastel pink necktie was selected to bring a delicate pop of warmth into the blue-and-white palette, preventing the look from feeling monotonous.
The weather on our shoot day was phenomenal; it had been ages since I witnessed skies this crystalline and pristine. The ocean sparkled beneath the sun, while distant islands floated softly along the horizon. To be honest, the journey was not exactly seamless—flying from Shanghai to Matsuyama, then switching to a local slow train—but the moment we stepped onto the platform and saw that stretch of open sea, every bit of effort paid off.
To complement the blue sky and sea, I chose a classic navy-and-white sailor suit. Paired with knee-high white socks and brown loafers, holding a heavy school bag while standing on the platform made time feel like it had slowed down. I picked a soft pink neck ribbon, which added just the right pop of color against the blue and white palette without looking flat.
The weather that day was truly cooperative; it had been ages since I shot under such a pristine blue sky. The sea sparkled in the sunlight, with distant islands faintly visible on the horizon. To capture this crisp clarity, the photographer brought a Nikon Z6 III paired with the Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD.
I have to say, this focal range is ideal for this kind of location. At 35mm, you can capture the station's wooden eaves and the train tracks, framing the nostalgic vibe of Shimonada Station. Zooming into the telephoto end with the fast F2.8 aperture nicely compresses the background sea into a clean backdrop, making the subject stand out effortlessly. The lens is definitely on the heavier side, but in an outdoor setting that requires frequent perspective shifts, skipping lens swaps made candid shooting remarkably smooth.
We took shots on the platform bench, beside the utility poles, and across the crosswalk. Sitting on the blue wooden bench under the direct sun, the texture of the White stockings and loafers looked exquisitely refined. When the sea breeze blew through, hair naturally drifted across my face, capturing spontaneous moments of brushing it aside. Whether leaning one leg casually on the guardrail or glancing back at the camera, that unposed, effortless vibe turned out to be the most photogenic.
The wooden benches inside the station and the timetables posted on the walls also carried plenty of atmosphere, so we shot several sets indoors as well. Outside the station, there was a small postbox and potted greenery, paired with a white bus in the distance—the entire frame was soaked in that authentic Japanese style photography summer feel. The Z6 III's color science held up solidly in such high-saturation scenes; straight-out-of-camera shots already had great depth.
When shooting on location, harsh midday light or poor weather are always the biggest concerns. But this time, Shimonada's ocean breeze, crystal-blue sky, and aged platform brought all the right elements together. We shot during peak sunlight; though squinting slightly against the brightness, that subtle squint actually gave off a relaxed, lazy summer charm. The concrete platform reflected intense glare, yet it never disrupted our flow. With the station being so serene—accompanied only by crashing waves and occasional passing trains—the entire shoot felt deeply calming.
Looking through the photos during post-processing, even the air feels tinted blue. Though last summer has passed, every time I flip through these photos, I can still vividly recall running around the station in uniform under the summer sun.
