It has been ages since I shared my real-life self; I have been recalibrating my mindset lately, so taking advantage of the fine weather, I booked a photographer to visit a classical garden for a Chinese-style photography session in a cheongsam. This styling embraced a vintage style outfit and graceful direction, forgoing ornate accessories to let the fabric texture anchor the frame. The garment was an altered sleeveless black cheongsam with a velvet-like luster, with its highlight being the expansive splash of pink floral washes and deep emerald leaves. Black as the foundation proved exceptionally slimming, while the broad pink floral prints broke up any dreariness to give my complexion a vibrant glow. To complement this cheongsam, red traditional frog closures served as accents, with a gently fastened mandarin collar preserving traditional poise.
Great care went into hair and makeup. The base makeup was kept fair, clean, and translucent, while a soft pink blush was swept generously across my cheeks to evoke youthful, sweet innocence. A pale pink lip gloss was chosen for a minimalist, fresh feel. My hair was gathered into an elegant low chignon, with bangs falling naturally along both sides of my brow, finished on the side with a purplish-red silk flower hairpin whose slender stamens dangled gracefully to echo the pink prints on the dress. My nails featured long black-and-white polka-dot art accented with tiny red beads, serving as a subtle modern touch within the vintage look.
The garden exterior within the park featured vermilion wooden railings, intricately carved window lattices, a serene pond, and lush foliage. The photographer made clever use of the covered corridor's longitudinal depth and the geometric lines of the lattices to craft layered compositions. When first standing beside the railings, I was unsure how to pose and casually looked at my phone, which unexpectedly yielded a delightfully organic downcast profile. Gradually settling into the rhythm, I leaned against the red railings with chin resting softly in hand, or perched on a rock by the pond with hands braced behind. Natural light within classical courtyards can be harsh, so the photographer suggested angling my chin slightly upward or turning my profile toward the light, keeping facial contours defined while giving the blush a radiant glow.
As a two-faced Cancerian carrying a reflective 4i introspective demeanor, I tend to warm up slowly before the camera. Rather than facing direct studio strobes, I adapt far better to easing into mood outdoors amidst garden pavilions. No exaggerated expressions are needed—simply wandering, pausing, and leaning, capturing genuine fleeting emotions through the lens. Whether lost in thought looking at my phone or gazing contemplatively against a window frame, the cheongsam inherently carries rich narrative weight. Coupled with the quiet, verdant tranquility of the garden, the images tell their own tale without words.
The entire shoot was breezy and leisurely, free of cumbersome props, wrapping up smoothly within two to three hours. Though lacking a specific fictional role, merging the cool poise of traditional attire with the sweet charm of pink florals made for a deeply fulfilling casual cosplay experience. Reviewing the camera's raw textures on the way home reminded me that stripping away theatrical personas and simply savoring the process is what keeps creative passion alive.
