The shooting of this Shirasu Azusa swimsuit look was mainly intended to present a refreshing and relaxed feeling within a summer atmosphere. As a well-known character, people probably mostly think of her uniform or combat postures, but for this beach swimsuit outdoor shoot, we hoped to capture her lively side that belongs to summer.
For the wig part, I deliberately chose a soft ice-silk material, because shooting outdoors with strong sea breezes would make a too-stiff wig look terribly fake. The high ponytail and various small hair accessories and colored ribbons on the styling actually took a lot of time to secure. To keep it in place under natural windy beach conditions, positioning clips were layered at the roots, and a tiny bit of hairspray was used to manage the stray hairs around the sides. Preparing wigs is a very basic step in cosplay, but what determines the texture of the final photos are often these seemingly unimportant hair details.
Let's talk about the costume. This summer outfit adopts a pink-and-white striped material, which doesn't excessively reflect light under intense illumination and instead makes the skin tone look cleaner. The dark blue large bow on the chest and the layered ruffled design give the overall silhouette a fluffy feel. When shooting kneeling poses, it is necessary to constantly adjust the spreading angle of the skirt to avoid stiff wrinkles, which actually tests the photographer's snapshot abilities. The matching loose white sheer sleeves are also very light and thin, able to create a very natural dynamic when blown by the sea breeze. In terms of props, the blue-and-white toy water gun in hand, including the transparent spray nozzle structure, was restored. Holding it to pose not only relieves the awkwardness of posing but also adds interactivity to the frame.
Regarding the shooting location, we chose the beach during the afternoon. The light contrast wasn't particularly strong at that time, but it could still produce a transparent feel. On cloudy days or during periods with slightly thicker cloud layers, when the color of the sea water is subdued, it can better highlight the character subject of the white-and-pink swimsuit. In the second picture, I chose to kneel on a blue-and-white striped picnic mat, intentionally lifting the hem of the skirt to show off the hollow-out design at the waist of the outfit, which can both elongate the overall body proportions and highlight the refreshing feature of this attire. Since I wasn't wearing tights in the photo, the texture and bone transitions of the exposed skin under the strong natural light of the beach required the lighting to be exceptionally soft to avoid overexposure or heavy shadows. Fortunately, the light control was well done, and the skin texture and colors are relatively real without color banding.
In post-processing, I tried my best to maintain the bright tone of the original photos. Without excessively boosting the saturation, I only slightly adjusted the color temperature toward the cooler side to ensure that the character's skin tone and the pink of the costume wouldn't mix and turn reddish or purplish. Many people tend to make the ambient light very blue when shooting beach locations, causing the characters to look grayish, so I chose to retain a little warmth to make the frame look warmer. For the occasional clutter and tourists appearing in the background, we also did some blurring or cropping processing to make the background cleaner, so that the visual focus of the character can be more concentrated.
Actually, every time I shoot this kind of outdoor swimsuit styling, my biggest worry isn't about wardrobe malfunctions since safety measures against exposure are usually well prepared inside, but rather the impact of waves, sand, and sea breeze on the makeup. The air humidity at the seaside is high, and oil and sweat are inevitable, so oil-controlling products were used in the makeup, and the eyeliner of the eye makeup was slightly thickened to withstand the strong beach light. Some fellow hobbyists might be curious about this little toy in my hand; actually, it can directly squirt water. Although it's a small prop, spraying each other with water guns during the shoot makes it much more fun.
All in all, the experience of this cosplay shoot was fully maximized. Although there were quite a few people on site, the effect of the final photos makes people feel comfortable and pleasant. The youthful energy of summer is probably being able to stand by the beach without any burden, blowing the sea breeze, wearing a refreshing outfit you like, and capturing the beauty of the moment. The selection of clothing materials, the processing of the wig, the restoration of props, and the use of ambient light—the synergy of every link can achieve a photo full of atmosphere.
