Choosing to challenge Star Guardian Kai'Sa was not only because of the exquisite skin splash art but also because Kai'Sa has always been my main champion in League of Legends, the one I have invested the most energy into. This outfit, dominated by a pink color palette, was highly meticulous in material selection. I specially chose fabric with subtle pearlescent luster to construct the main part, so that it can restore that starlight-flickering texture from the original art under light. For the collar decoration, the star-shaped core on the chest, and the details of the wristguards, a lot of manual stiffening crafts were used to pursue crisper edges, striving to keep the costume standing tall from any angle instead of collapsing limply.
The hair and makeup section was the absolute top priority of this styling, as well as the most blood-sweating process. For this pink hair cosplay look, the wig selected three layers of different pink shades for mixed color handling, with key volumizing and fixing done at the hair roots to recreate that flowing yet styled silhouette from the game; the hair strands still needed to be manually adjusted at any time during shooting to maintain their curves. The custom-shaped hair accessory before the forehead was also entirely handcrafted, with its surface covered in rhinestones and glitter powder, hoping to reflect authentic starlight in the photos. For the eye makeup, I abandoned heavy eyeliner, employing gradient pinkish-purple eyeshadows instead to cater to the dreamy theme of Star Guardian, focusing glitter placement right at the inner corners, and sticking a custom star mark on the right cheekbone to make the gaze look more piercing alongside the eye makeup.
The presentation of the props was also a major difficulty. The energy blades on my hands were specially customized and given a lighting treatment. Although it's not actual fluorescent material, under the photographer's special lighting layout combined with the overlay of post-production glowing special effects, the visual impact still managed to reach expectations. Those floating rabbits and flying wings in the original art would look rigid and increase costs if completely made into physical set dressings; hence, we adopted 3D modeling for the initial sketch, then combined it with post-production masking to composite them into the frame. The benefit of doing this is the freedom to adjust the perspective relations and lighting directions of the suspended objects, letting them blend better with the surrounding pink light effects and the overall spatial sense of the frame, constructing an effect of the character being placed within a magic circle.
Regarding the coolness mentioned in the post, my understanding is that although this Star Guardian series looks pink, tender, and dreamy on the outside, that stubborn and determined will when facing Void threats is the core of the character. Therefore, during the shoot, I deliberately adjusted my micro-expressions, not maintaining a conventional sweet smile, but using a sharper and more focused gaze to convey the character's emotions. This clashing contrast of sweetness and sharpness coexisting, paired with the highly impactful glowing weapons in hand, can maximize the charm of this character.
Carrying out this cosplay took about two and a half months back and forth, from preparing props, wig styling, researching makeup looks, to the final official shoot and post-production compositing. On the day of the actual shoot in the studio, just adjusting the hair, makeup, and prop placements consumed several hours, followed by holding the long weapons and locking onto various focal points to attempt different combat stances, which was a massive test for both stamina and core strength. My arms were sore for a long time after shooting, and several actions were frequently stuck because the hair was too long. But when the photographer's final output photos arrived, seeing that it truly seemed like the Kai'Sa who guards starlight standing right before my eyes, I instantly felt that the repeated tossing and all the hard work over these two-plus months had a highly concrete and worthwhile reward.
The final presentation of this piece of work would not be possible without the full collaboration and coordination of the makeup artist, the photography teacher, and the post-production classmates. As a cosplayer, being able to present my beloved main champion in a real and dedicated way, and conveying the character's inner power through the tension of imagery, is indeed an immense sense of achievement. I hope everyone can feel our dedication and passion for character accuracy through this set of photos.
