Bringing Cartethyia's cosplay to the Ryoga anime convention this time feels like completing a long-cherished plan. To restore the character's cool and noble temperament, quite a long time of preparation was spent beforehand. From wig styling and grooming to debugging the fit of the elf ear props, every detail had to be repeatedly polished, after all, convention photos are also one of the important standards for testing cosplay restoration.
The costume adopts the classic color scheme of black, white, and blue. The outer cloak has a strong sense of elegance and flow; when walking, it can sway with the movements, and the visual layering comes out immediately. In terms of makeup, the ice-blue pupils were emphasized, paired with light golden long hair, staying as close as possible to the exotic feel of the original design. The most eye-catching is still the huge blue glowing prop sword in hand. The sword body is transparent, and the golden handguard features some hollowed-out and leaf-shaped carvings. It feels heavy in hand, and although posing with it was a bit strenuous, the final photo effect is definitely worth it.
During the shoot, to match the water element setting, we deliberately sprinkled water in front of the lens to create the instantaneous feeling of splashing water. This kind of dynamic snapshot extremely tests the photographer's shutter speed and angle, and also requires me to maintain absolute stability of posture within those few seconds when the water droplets fall. The lighting at the convention site was relatively complex; we deliberately chose a grayish-white grid wall with a relatively clean background, utilizing diagonal composition to make the frame look simpler and more full of tension.
The atmosphere at the Ryoga anime convention site was particularly good. Although it was crowded, everyone was very enthusiastic. When walking around the venue in this outfit, the cloak would often accidentally be stepped on or snagged, so I had to constantly pay attention to adjusting the positions of the skirt hem and ribbons. Many people asked me if holding such a heavy sword was tiring; actually, what was truly tiring was keeping the sword horizontal, with my arm constantly exerting subtle force, but as long as satisfying pictures could be captured, these fatigues were nothing.
Every time I do a cosplay, it's a deep dialogue with the character. Cartethyia's settings are complex and her personality is full; to showcase her temperament in a set of convention photos, besides external costumes and props, what's even more important is the portrayal of gaze and posture. This shoot also gave me a new understanding of lens language, exploring how to show the dynamic aesthetic of a character in static photos.
The production of convention photos cannot be separated from the patient guidance of the photographer and the help of logistics friends, who ran back and forth in the exhibition hall, studying light and composition together. The anime convention is not only a stage for display, but also a grand gathering for like-minded fans to communicate. Through this Ryoga anime convention, I also met many friends who like Wuthering Waves and Cartethyia. Everyone gathered together to discuss characters and share insights into cosplaying, and this pure happiness is hard to come by. I hope to meet everyone offline in the future with more carefully prepared characters.
